What is the best way to paint an engine on a 48 C. I have been told to use Chevrolet engine paint and you will be close, but I wanted to make sure.

The correct color is Pursian Orange #1.. It is a pumpkin color... Chevy orange is more RED than the original C color.

You can get from local Body Shop or maybe NAPA will mix... or others that list PO1... NOT ALLIS ORANGE.... There were 3 different "orange" colors used over the years.

I've found that Plastikote's Chevrolet Orange #200 is a much lighter in color Orange and is closer to PO1. Not a dead ringer, but darn close. Duplicolor has two Chevy Orange's they offer. One is #DE1607, and the other is DE1620. Both have more Red in them like Steve mentioned. I would imagine you could get something in a rattle can from your local automotive paint store if you have one.

If you are worried about the motor getting TO HOT and burning the paint... that does not appear to be a concern. All ALLIS motors were painted with the same paint that was used on the sheet metal and other castings.
