Sorry didn't take pictures yet, and just found the forum today. After losing my job just before the pandemic, my wife and I returned to my grandfather's farm, and I've started a small market garden operation. While cleaning out the barn, I found his 1976 AC- 5040. It hasn't been run in 20 years or more. I pick up things quickly, and picked up the shop manual and parts catalog for the tractor. He did not have the AC-400 loader installed when he bought it new because he had a case that had a loader. He sold the case at auction c. 1983. I'd like to eventually install a loader on this machine after market if that's possible. Otherwise, I'll try to find a skidsteerer for working out here. I thought I'd start a thread though about the process, and hopefully lean on some of y'all for advice. Much obliged to meet y'all, and thanks for the wonderful resource. -Dave

| Welcome to the forum. I have a 1980 5040 among other AC tractors and I love mine. It’s probably my favorite tractor. Try to post some pictures for us. |

Welcome to the Forum. The 5040 is a handy and tough little tractor. You'll enjoy it once it's running. The A-C 400 loader (full hydraulic) is ideal for the tractor. Hopefully yours has the integral pump at the back ? However, the 400 loader is by no means "quick-attach" The 5040 has a 2-stage clutch for the PTO and ground travel. The upper 2 gears are synchronized (at least they are in the 6-sp version) The power steering is great on them.  |

About the same tractor as the Long 445 and the Oliver 1265 good tractors.I have a couple 5040 parts tractors.Lots of new parts on ebay for them. |

| Nice pictures be very careful with the grill, yours looks to be in real good shape and those grills are hard to come by. You should put a battery in it and see if it runs you may be suprised. |

Sorry about the job, but pretty cool to get back to the family farm. There are I think 2 people selling adapters for the 400 series loaders which enable them to utilize skid steer attachments or simply not have a bucket hanging off the front end all the time. As was already said, drain whatever diesel is in the tank. Then clean the fuel tank, flush the lines and change your fuel filter prior to starting. I'm not familiar with the engine you have, but if feasible, may not be a bad idea to pull either the injector or glow plugs from each cylinder and spray get some oil in them then let set for a day or 2 before first start attempt is made Looking forward to your progress! |
