I need to pull the right hand side diff bearing. What would be the best puller to use.
  Thanks Tim

In chassis ?? or on a bench ??

In the chassis. I see it takes a 2 jaw puller. I bought a big Proto 2 jaw, but I can't make it up. They offer a smaller version that would fit in brake housing. But I'd like to know if that will work before ordering.
   Thanks Tim

Take a chisel and split the roller cage, so all the rollers fall out. Remove the debris. Get behind the inner race with a prybar of some sort and have someone else heat the inner race quickly to make it loose and pry it off the differential carrier. Can't say I've ever done one like that, but I think it would work with two people.

Heat inner race red hot in one place, then quickly hit red spot with sharp chisel and hammer.                  MACK

Wasn't able to work on splitting the bearing cage today, that's tomorrow's project.

Just to follow up on pulling this bearing. The cage has been taken off. You can see the holes in the casting of the rear diff at 9 and 3. This allows you to get the 2 jaw puller fully behind the race.

I had to order a set of long narrow jaws to fit behind the inner race. Also cut the cross bar some. I used a piece from my bearing/seal driver set, as a push plate. I used my air impact and the race came right off, no heat.

I'll preface with... I've never had to pull one of those before, but almost looks like a threaded rod with big backing washers on back side, with a piece of pipe and nut/washer on the front would drag it out...  or a slide-hammer...

But if faced with failure there, my ultimate go-to would be to chisel the cage, then reach in there with the smallest MIG gun, or a 1/8" 60-series rod and apply a bead around the inside radius of the race, and let it cool.  As it does, it'll shrink the race to the point where it'll basically fall out.

Duhp! Ya beat me!  Cool deal, and congrats!  Great pix, btw!!!Clap

If you welded around that race it would get tighter. Would work on internal race.           MACK

Ah, then I misunderstood.  I thought it was the internal race he was trying to pull.

He was pulling the internal race of a tapered roller bearing on the differential carrier, not the cup, which is in the carrier flange.

Tim,
Nice work documenting this procedure. Is this about what the manual says to do? I had never seen your puller system, so I learned something today too. What was the problem the bearing was bad or just wanted to do this as part of the rebuild??
Another question: Is the other side OK?
Regards,
 Chris

Chris, I am following the manual. Taking the bearing cage off goes with heating up the inner race. The puller set up I have now, I don't think I will need to get the cage off on the other side. With the rear end differential set over. I was able to see the roller bearings somewhat on the other side. I saw some bad spots in that bearing, can't see the race. What prompted this action was one day recently I had a small leak of oil from the rear end on the floor. Then it stopped, then a few days later it was real bad. I found it was coming from axel seal in the bearing carrier. If my new brakes had been in there they would have been ruined. When I got the bearing carrier out I saw the race, SOB.

we use blind bearing pullers alot that go in the bore and expands then attaches to a puller or slide hammer,  what i see in the picture is a race that you could weld around

Dr Allis you mentioned getting all the debris out. Here is my assistant getting those roller bearings out. He loved doing it, and got them all. You can see my shop is our old cow barn. In the gutter are wood 8x10's, so I'm not doing in any welding in there.

Good help is hard to find these days !!   I see he came to work prepared, with that flashlite strapped to his forehead.

Memories in the making!  I'm proud of you Tim.  Too bad I couldn't be there to help you out, but then you've got a better helper there with you.  I'd bet he can get up and down off the floor a LOT better than I can!

Thanks for your good words Ted. My little grandson Jaxon, likes coming out there with me. I try to find projects for him to do, and he likes that. Today I got shims from Sandy Lake that go in the bearing carrier to shim the bearing. Now I can start to put it back together.
