There's a post about a "snapping" energy cell on a diesel engine on an ALLIS engine. I've read past posts about them but never gave it much thought until this evening. What do they do and are they strictly an A/C deal ? Thanks

Its not strictly Allis. Minneapolis and Case ran them to. Not positive but seems to me even International had an engine or 2 that used them.

Oliver used them too. They were the LaNova design injection system from the LaNova company that was in Germany. It was one way to get diesel engines to fire smoothly, without the hammering of a direct injection/open chamber designs. The engines could be less expensive to build because the components didn't have to be as rugged as direct injection engines. Eventually, everyone went away from the design because of harder starting, lower HP output per cubic inch, slower engine speeds, etc. Look it up on the internet.

I figured it was a diesel with LP injection. That supplied some energy.

Would it have been a International motor, I'm thinking about all of them started on gas then made the switch?

What I find interesting is what the Lanova Cell was trying to do, slow the rate of burn for a more gradual rise in cylinder pressure, we do today with pilot injection. It is true that everyone went away from the energy cell type combustion chamber, but the results of the energy cell combustion have always been on the table and we never forgot about them. We finally got there with split/pilot injection. Why do you think todays engines are just as quiet as a comparable size gasser???
