New member hear so please forgive any dumb questions. I know oil discussion is a highly controversial topic, but I just purchased my first tractor a 1960 AC D14 and while reading through the operators manual my head is spinning as far as what type of oil to use in the different parts of the tractor. Below is a list of what is recommended in the manual. Looking for opinions on what to run in each as some of these oil are no longer classified/labeled as they were in 1960. Any help would be greatly appreciated! My main questions are: Where can I use generic transmission/hydraulic fluid? What gear oil can be substituted for "SAE 80EP" and "SAE 20W"? Front Support SAE80 EP Power Steering SAE 5W-20 or 10W-30 Motor Oil SAE 10, SAE 20, or SAE 30 Rear Final Drive SAE 20W Hydraulic Pump SAE 10 or SAE20 Transmission SAE 80 EP Power Director SAE 20W uploads/21851/20210306_135236-min.jpg" rel="nofollow - uploads/21851/20210306_135236-min.jpg

Not to hijack the thread, but I'm curious as to why the change from 80w in the finals on say a D17 or WD45 to 20W in the finals on the D14 and D15. As to answer part of your questions, hytran oil meating 821xl spec in the hydraulic, power director and power steering systems.For the engine get an oil with higher zinc and phosphorus levels(1100-1200 +ppm) in a 10w/30 weight. You will have to go to a diesel grade or valvoline VR1 to get that level of zinc.The two diesel oils I recommend and use my self are Motorcraft super duty diesel 10w/30 or rotella 10w/30, Motorcraft has a little higher levels.Rotella straight 30w is now a low zinc oil that should be avoided.Delo 400 and Delvac 1300 are also low zinc as well. Any oil with a SN or later API service rating will be a low zinc oil which you need to avoid. These old flat tappet engines don't tolerate these new automotive oils for very long and will round off cam lobes eventually. That's a nice straight lookin D14 ya got there.

Thanks! When you refer to the shell rotella do you use the T4 or T5? I use the Rotella "gas truck" in my f140, and T6 in all my small engines, motorcycles and dirt bikes. There are a couple types of "universal tractor fluid" ... Look at the sticker on the pail and some will be VERY GENERIC.... "use in old tractors".... others will say MEETS ALLIS 821, CAT TO2, C3, JD xxx , CASE xxx.... probably will have 20 or 30 different specs it meets.. Thats what you want... The other stuff is for older model B, C, WD tractors.. It would probably work in the D15, but spend a few bucks more and get the Quality oil.

I've got 3 D-14s, they all get SAE30 for the engine, 'Universal Tractor Fluid' for everything else( hydralics,trannies, rear end). Get my oils from Walmart. Yes maybe not 'high end' but none of my girls see hard use and frankly after 50+years,well, 'oil is oil'....Now IF I was to totaly replace every seal and ring and mehcanical thing that 'oil' touches..then I'd think about upgrading to a 'better' oil, maybe, though they'd outlive me before any damage could be done with wallyWorld oils... ------------- 3 D-14s,A-C forklift, B-112 Kubota BX23S lil' TOOT( The Other Orange Tractor) Never burn your bridges, unless you can walk on water |

| Really appreciate the input! I think I'll go with the Rotella T4 (1200 ppm zinc) and add the Rislone to it as well for the motor. The fleet farm universal oil I linked does list Allis Chalmers on the label so I should be good to use that in everything else. Do most of you run the universal fluid in final drives as well or do some of you use a specific gear oil? Am I okay to use the universal oil in for power steering too? |

you can put the UTV in everything except the motor.......... if you prefer gear lube in the trans and finals, that is also OK. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

Use it... tractors 60+, it''ll appreciate NEW oil !! besides there's NO way ,you could wear out a D-14 in YOUR lifetime... I seriously doubt it's 'factory fresh' ( all new bearings, seals,shafts, etc. ) odds are it leaks oil at the PTO lever by your left foot ..... be SURE to have a 2nd empty bucket when draining the rear end. If the rockshaft cylinder or hose leaks a bit, the diff case can be FULL of 'hydraulic' oil.....found that out one day... ------------- 3 D-14s,A-C forklift, B-112 Kubota BX23S lil' TOOT( The Other Orange Tractor) Never burn your bridges, unless you can walk on water |

YEP.. the ORIGINAL SPEC was SAE20 ......... Not ALLIS 821 ... You will be fine.. As long as the oil has SOME SPECS to it... C3, TO2, etc...( besides JD 303) ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |
