pros and cons of hydrostatic transmission v shuttle shift.

any thoughts on tractor brands?

I have a Yanmar 2020D with a Koyker loader. It has a power shift transmission. That tractor has done anything and everything ever asked of it. Reliable as the day is long,parts are readily available.Uses very little fuel.Smal enough to get into tight places big enough to get the job done.

Gonna be hard pressed on later model equipment NOT to find a Hydrostat.  I have a Deere 2305, dependable and strong little 20hp.

Unless you are going to be consistently pulling a load like plowing or such, hydrostat is the way to go.  I've plowed the garden with my 955 but I had to engage the front wheels and I wouldn't want to do it very often.  I like hydro with a belly mower also.  In the past, Yanmar didn't have live pto but Deere, made by Yanmar does, contract may have expired by now but I don't think so.

I like the Kubota B-2100 I picked up for $6500, a coupla years ago. Though I don't often use the Bush hog 3 blade rear mower it came with, it's hanging around as a plan B mower, if one of the ZT's craps out. As others have said, Hydro is the way to go, in small (under 30 HP) CUT's.  Only thing I see on mine, is that the cruise control always seems to be slower than I wanna go.  If you put your foot down, it'll go faster, but won't lock in high speed.

I don't have a loader on mine, but If I could find a loader to fit (and the hydraulic hook up kit, I'd probably go for it.  Way mine is, it makes a great 3PH platform, cultivator, aerator, blade, landscape box, mowers, etc.

Some might say I paid too much, but it's earned its keep, and I bought it from an older couple, with 1250 GENTLE hours on it...Wink

I am looking at a Royal King RK37, which, I think, is a Yanmar rebadged. It has a Yanmar engine in it.

Rural King RK 37 is made by TYM of South Korea, the motor is a Yanmar. I am not familiar with TYM tractors but I know for a fact you'll love the Yanmar motor

I bought a Massey Ferguson GC2400 in 2011. The only reason I bought MF was the price. They had a display at a neighboring county fair. The tractor and loader was $9999. I ended up buying the 60" deck with it and  gave $11,500 for the tractor/loader. mower deck, ag tires and block heater. 

The engine runs only a hydraulic pump and everything is hydraulic/hydrostatic. 
 I now have a 54" 3PH snow blower, too.

Before I bought I priced a similar Kubota ($15,500) and John Deere ($17,400). I don't think the MF is any better than any of the rest, but price was the biggest factor. I did have several people tell me to stay away from the New Holland Boomer. I have had zero problems and never once regretted buying the MF.

I’ve got a Kubota 5660 w shuttle shift. Preferred it over hydrostatic. It’s open station and my one complaint is a high pitch whine when PTO is engaged. Believe this is all due to the hydro working. I wear ear protection due to the noise.
One thing I love is the skidsteer front attachment to enable various buckets and skidsteer implements.

i vote for the hydro, reason is i had 2 tractors with the shuttle shift, one of them the shifting got worse and worse, if you were revvvved up and doing something, there would be a pause in the shifting, almost throwed me over board a couple times. repairs were more than the tractor was worth, it went ona consignment sale. 2nd tractor it was on a (gasp) deere i used to own, it would ussually sit over the winter, and it would draw moisture onto the linkage...causing it to rust and stick. the linkage was on the outside but under the cab, didn't matter...would still rust up and stick. that tractor is gone too. i run alot of hydros and if run correctly they will out last you!

I just love that screaming little Yanmar in my JD 1026R.

when bush hogging you gotta push the throttle to around 3200 to get the 650 pto R's.  Yeeehaaaa.

I don't think it would be as much fun if it did not crank to life so quickly with that puff of black smelly stuff.

It all depends on the intended use.  For around the acreage - I love my JD 855; with hydro, 4WD, JD 420 loader (removable bucket), mid mount mower. Yanmar motor.  For field work, a shuttle shift would be better.

Son has adapter his tree puller to several Compact tractors and has plumbed the hydraulics for them using a diverter valve . 
 one thing for sure is they need a large weight box and or loaded tires , then with a loader loaded tires are a must .

Not sure what size you're looking.  My experience is limited to a 15 yr. old 4610 Deere hydro and it's been trouble free and not babied from a use standpoint.  The engine is Yanmar diesel, not sure of the drive-train.

I bought a Kioti CK3510 last February and love it.  I was going to get a 4510 which is the next frame size bigger but glad I sayed with the 3510.  I use it for most of the things I use the CA for but it's got a loader so comes in super handy taking care of my draft horses.  I wanted the shuttle but he dealer was going to have to order it and had a hydro on the lot that he discounted to be the same price as the shuttle and i'm really glad I ended up with the hydro.  If your using it as a loader tractor I vote for the hydro.  I hate to say it but this tractor is everything that I wished my CA was, creeping capability because of the hydro, an operator platform you can climb onto without being half orangatang and the diesel engine torque will let you slow down the pto when your running the hay elevator without stalling the tractor.  I still love my CA but I love this tractor just as much.
