| Sale coming up in two weeks. D-17 series I wide front end gas snap coupler hitch one remote 50% rear tread but rims are good. Paint sheet metal original and a little neat up. Jumps out of gear. Any idea what it is worth? Not sure I want the project but I picked up 25 acres of side hill and not sure I want to work it with a narrow front end tractor, which is all I got |

Jumping out of gear is going to significantly affect its value. I don't think I would go over $2000. I guess a lot depends on the area, but I bought a running D-17 Series 1 last fall at a local auction for $1000. It is not a gear jumper, but it does have some hydraulic issues that I didn't get around to addressing before cold weather. It has almost new back tires and one new rear rim. I think Myron's (DSeries4) estimate of $1000 in parts, to fix a transmission, is actually a little low.

A grand to fix jumping gears? Seems pretty high to me. Shift lever and maybe a couple of good used sliding gears. I've never done the work, but I don't see how that'd take a grand. AaronSEIA

hmm.. if it's same as a D-14 '3rdgearitis' , I can see it costing a grand..gear is 300+ ? then there's ,'should buy' the mating gear, replace some shifter parts,gasket set, new oil,couple bolts that 'walked away'...... Bid based on it DOES come outta 3rd...if you get it and it doesn't, huge bonus , you saved a grand AND your labour !! if you don't get it, well...'it wasn't meant to be'...... To me $1500 to $2000 would be plenty if it didn't jump out of gear for a series one. Have to be pretty good for me to bid $1200,

Are you willing to pay whatever is the top price of the day plus the buyers penalty? There are lots of tractors out there listed by owners that could be had with the option to completely access their condition. You don't need to get the first tractor that comes along. Keep you options open and generally a better deal will show itself. With gear jumpers a small repair can easily turn into a major project. ------------- If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere. Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you never rebuilt these trans then u have no ideal what else u find through out the rest of the gears . $1000. sounds like a Estimate price from the unknow until u get inside or at least pull shifter cover and know what u are looking on condition of all gear n collars . dr. p, This is for sure a roll of the dice. But I took a chance on a D17 a few years back. and got lucky. Mine is not a gear jumper. Bought at a auction I only heard it start and then had looked it over. I paid $1800 for a early model narrow front. My guess is $1500 for the one your looking at. Then plan to spend $2000 on the fixes. If you have some money left over take the wife out for a nice dinner at a fancy restaurant! These do tend to cost more than we anticipate! Just the nature of the beast. Good luck with your purchase. and congratulations on the property. Be careful! On something like a transmission repair I always figure time and parts costs.Then to get a realistic figure 2X the parts and 4X the labor. |

I see them on CL around here going for $1000 and there's no buyers premium. My D14 falls out of third. My solution has been to not use 3rd. Has always worked for me. I imagine 4th with the big stick pulled back would be close enough to 3rd. If it's at auction remember to figure in the buyers premium and credit card charge, usually 3%. to the amount you want to bid! The narrow front tipping over is a myth. A wide front will tip over just as easy. Guy down the street rolled his 9N ford, go figure! ------------- D14, D17, 5020, 612H, CASE 446 |

| I grew up on narrow front end tractors and never got close rolling one. Every time I see one rolled, some one was being a moron. Still this hill is pretty steep. Just want to work it once so I can make it level enough to make hay off it without busting my equipment and self all to heck |

| The wide front will float across rough ground much better. Years ago be were making hay in a field on the side of a hill. Guy was raking with a NF 3020, we were baling with a 185. Had to stop raking with the 3020 and re-hook to the 185 on the rake because the front bouncing wanted to cause it to tip over. NF standing still, I believe tip over point to be the same and maybe less, bouncing across field at 5+ mph is a different story. |

I've been through 3 of these jobs. As mentioned, there is usually more to add once you have it apart. Minimum items include gear and collar for each gear that is suspect. New bearings for each shaft. Had buy a new input shaft when my XT got done. As Fred said, without having done one you have no idea how much it costs. Fortunately I do not have any more to rebuild!

I would look for one that is not a jumper. Thousands of these were made and I see lots of them for sale. Take your time and find a nice one series three of four. They are a great tractor have had several over the years now have a 170 gas and a 175 diesel both great tractors. ------------- rieg |

MAN, the things that you know now that you wish you knew then  !! Dad traded a series 2 D17 with it's narrow front end along WITH it's attached factory WFE to a local "jockey" for a D 19 + $$ . What a losing deal on dads end  .
