Hey everyone! I was just wanting to get some recommendations to see if I am missing something on changing out the steering wheel on my Allis 7060. I learned recently reading these forums and posts that when Allis went to the black belly tractors in the later 7000 models they did some upgrades which included installing a smaller steering wheel. This was to allow for a bigger opening when entering and leaving the cab. I had to check it out on my tractor. I have a 16 3/4 inch steering wheel diameter with an 8 inch depth. That leaves me with a 13 inch opening between the steering wheel and the frame of the cab. I am a tall man, so any extra room would be welcomed. I see many upgraded the steps on the 7000's to the later steps, but was there a reason why many farmers didn't buy the smaller steering wheel? One is 'taller', so the 'ring',what you hold... is 3 VERTICAL inches further away from the column, so it'd be easier to get in and out ?? I think it's the 15" one, 39$ not the $40 one but please check the specs again Mr. Sun isn't up yet here... | It's not only smaller in diameter, but the dish isn't as deep. You want the 15 inch wheel. Why no one changed ?? You tell me. It is a huge improvement for getting in/out of the cab. The new step and steer wheel was effective at s/n 6001 and up or all BLACK belly tractors. |

Thanks for the replies. I planning on buying the 15 inch steering wheel, with the 4 1/2 inch dish and trying it out. I texted a friend that has a black belly, and he has 16 inches of clearance between the steering wheel and the cab with his smaller steering wheel. So that would be an extra 3 inches of space to go from 13 inch clearance to 16 inch clearance. I love the tractor, I am just wanting to make the comfort of getting into and out of the cab easier. I just don't understand why in the 43 years of the tractor's life it was never switched out like the steps were. |

Too bad A/C didn't put threaded holes in them to allow a puller to be used. I destroyed mine (had to use a torch too), to replace it, on my D17. It was real bad, so it didn't other me (except for being real closed to the gas tank).

I have not tried to remove it yet. I will work on it here in the next few days. I want to wait until the new steering wheel arrives first. I really appreciate the previous post about the other guy trying to remove his steering wheel. I am sure it will not be easy. It gave me an idea of what I am up against. I have a puller I will most likely be using.

I think the smaller wheel with the lower dish works best if you also have a telescopic option. My 7000 red belly does not have the telescopic feature. So it would make it hard to reach with the other steering wheel. It may be the only 7000 series model with that limitation? ------------- 405, 7000, 7050, 8050, 8070, L3, 2300 & 2600 disk |

Ive had the best luck using my legs lifting up evenly on both sides of the steering wheel and then with 2 ball peen hammers place one center and then with a clean wack while lifting with your legs hit the first hammer |

| You're not ever going to use the old wheel again. Take a 4 inch grinder with a slim 1/16" cutting disc and whack away at the plastic center until you expose the steel hub. Make a couple of lengthwise cuts on the hub to split it and easily pull it off. |
