I've only seen them on early WD's  that wasn't equipped with the snap coupler bell

Yep, in the parts catalog it's in the section for the WD pickup plow (the mounted plow used before snap coupler came out). It's called a shock spring in there. Everything on that plow was rigidly pinned to the tractor so I presume the shock spring lessened the impact if you plowed into a rock or other object.

Dad's 1950 WD had one on it. Picture taken about 1951 or 52. That's me on an uncle's lap there. Ain't I a handsome cuss. Wonder what happened through the years. The tires are the type with the continuous center rib. Still have the tractor and restored after I retired. Don't know what happened to the spring hitch thing but it disappeared from the tractor before I remember seeing it.

I still have one of those springs mounted on my 1948 WD.
When you get into a really hard pull, you can see it working.
Yes, it was for the plow grandpa had for that tractor when he first bought it. The plow is long gone, or somewhere on the property overtaken with Kudzu. But the spring is still there , hooked to the drawbar.
See no reason to remove it.

Dads WD had it before putting snap coupler on.

I acquired one years ago at an auction that appears to never have been used.  Was informed it was a pre snap coupler item on the WD tractor.  As mentioned above, it was used with the mounted plow.

Always thought that was an "out of the box" thought on making a spring. Pretty neat.

I have one with the draw bar both still painted. The plow mentioned above is quite rare. Had one of those too but donated it to a neighbor.

I was told it was used with a pin hitch plow.

I've got one of those springs too. Don't remember where it came from, been to the swap meet a couple of times, no interest. I suppose it will go again the next time I go.

I have a shock spring mounted on a 1050 WD.  It's been on that tractor my entire life.
