We have a winch on our gooseneck and it needs a new battery. I was going to buy a deep cycle battery but noticed it was only 400 CCA. Should I get a regular truck battery with higher CCA's instead? I've never bought a 'deep cycle' battery..always used any used high amp regular battery for my dump trailer and 2000# winches. I now have two batteries in the forklift and it 's a LOT happier starting, again, USED regular batteries. the big thing for me is to be sure they get recharged properly. On a trialer ,connected to truck, the truck's alternator should keep it 'topped up'.

A dual purpose Marine battery might work for you if you want some deep cycle reserve as well as cranking power. They are intended for starting boats as well as powering the other functions where a deep cycle battery is normally used. Web search dual purpose marine battery to read about them. If they have a MCA (marine cranking amps) rating multiply by .75 to get the CCA rating.

i've used marine deep cycle batteries in lots of things, i think it would be a good fit for you. you can get them in the big CCA sizes too.

The Deka MF1231 Battery usually packs 1000 CCA's and works quite well for winches and equipment like that. The thing is with any Battery, you need to keep the reserve in it high so it lasts. Should do the trick for ya though........ Steve@B&B

I am slowly swapping all the batteries here to AGM as can find them. Extended the life of my Harley battery from under three to five years, my lawn tractor from two to now almost four years and still hanging in there. My Pickup has twin batteries, went to AGM and cranks like never before.

I run twin 31P tractor trailer batteries 1050 amp each, pulls my winch and the hydraulic motor for my ramps, works great,
Big truck parts houses and truck dealers almost always have them on sale, It’s been 2-3 years, but I think I gave $79 each for these from Mack

Get a higher CCA and a deep cycle battery. Vehicle batteries are designed for quick draw down. Deep cycle are for slow continuous draw down. Makes a big difference in how long they last and performance. Cheap out and you may get cheap returns.

That’s why I used truck batteries, winch motors and the hydraulic pump motors are basically starter motors, under a hard pull winches can be drawing 650+ amps, I don’t consider that in the realm of slow draw, it can kill a battery fast!. I’ve always considered a deep cycle for trolling motors, camper lights, etc

Miller...on them AGM batteries...i know we have to have a special battery charger for them, soooooooo.....if we put them in a vehicle, does anything need to be changed on the alternator to keep them charged up?

Shameless that charger puts the deep charge into them making them last longer. Your alternator will keep up a charge in your battery but it won't put the deep charge in it.
