Hay guys need help ASAP. one of the twins isn't feeding from mama and 'somehow' I need info on feeding it some milk. Is cows milk OK ? Poor lil lamb mama's not helping thanks Jay

I believe cows is OK. Get your finger wet with milk and stick it in the lamb's mouth. Growing up on a dairy farm, we raised orphaned lams that were given to us by sheep farmers. We bottled feed them cows milk. But they were already bottle trained. Dusty

try to get lamb to suck on bottle nipple if no luck you need to tube him . ie force feed. need to get some milk in his belly ------------- Cowboy UP |

don't give it cows milk,get some colostrum and lamb milk replacer.Do not over feed. |

hi try tipping the ewe on her bottom like you do when you are shearing sheep and then put the lamb on the teat and hold the lamb on the teat and see if it sucks sometimes you can put your finger in the corner of the lamb's mouth to help to get them started sucking .If you have no luck you will have to tube it hope this helps ------------- Tractors Allis EB,two C,diesel G |

well he's up and happy ! neighbour bought a 'bottle' and he took to it pretty darn fast... he's one of a pair, born early this morning. Like Kiwi says, you get em to take the teat into their mouth (momma ewes teat) and if they don't start to suckle, sticking your finger into the corner of their mouth causes them to push against it to push it out and that causes them to squeeze the teat and release the milk. Then it's just get out of the way. They've GOTTA have the colostrum, it's Mother Nature's way of jump starting them and keeping bacteria and giving them antibodies and protects them against disease and and infections. thanks guys ! our overnight guest has one home to the farm ! Slowly remaking the 'stable' here back into my OFFICE ! Kinda forgot what goes in ...comes out...sigh. Lil guy was quite active buttin had against all the chairs, moving them all over the room. Owners KNOW about colostrum..I'm pretty sure now that he knows about suckin, he amd mama will be best of friends. thanks again for helping a 'city slicker' ! We used to give a tablespoon of warm honey to the lambs. Gently massage their throat with your fingers a couple of times. This will help them to swallow. The honey is a source of quick digestible energy. Goat milk will work as a substitute for sheep milk. |

Gosh Ted I didn’t realize you were a sheep expert! Unless you intend to be a long term lamb feeder I’d try to get it back to and nursing the ewe ASAP. | Sheep milk is 10 to 12% fat while cow milk is 3 to 4 % fat. You need to get some lamb milk replace or the chilli meat is going to start being in a negative energy balance really quick |

I've had them survive. Not the right thing to do, I realize chances are supposedly poor, but I've had them survive. Nowadays, keep some colostrum on hand. |

Although Jerseys do in fact have higher solids milk, no mammal will march exactly what the lamb needs other than the ewe. Especially when it comes to colostrum. Both lamb colostrum and milk replacer comes very close as will milk from the mother or another ewe. It may seem like a hassle but you’ll be far ahead haltering the ewe and getting the lamb to nurse even if you have to milk her and initially bottle the lamb. At this point you may also have to rub his sibling all over the lamb needing to suck so the ewe will claim it. update: Well G2 seems to KNOW where and how to get breakfast,lunch and dinner and several in between meals ! My 'stable' has be reconfigured back into an office too ! Just wanted to say 'thanks' again. Being a 'displaced cityslicker', cuddling a 6hr old lamb was an eye opening experience and it was really nice that the Allis family offered their knowledge to help G2 survive and thrive ! As for FG last year, I don't recall the post, but if someone offered a 'link' to a 'bobcat only' forum or website, that's where I'd expect a quicker reply with detailed info that could solve a bobcat problem. Hay...G2 IS 'farm machinery'. He's a selfpropelled, autonoumus lawn mower. If you plan on having sheep get one of these. First year I lambed a friend that has had sheep for 50 years gave me one. He said this makes a dumb lamb a smart lamb.
