OK, I looked at it some more and it looks like I can get enough access to the timing hole to check the timing.  I have a "Sears Best" Craftsman inductive pickup timing light from the late 1970s.  Will this work on the 12V positive ground system on my D12?

Searching the web, I find that some say this type of light will work OK with the positive ground; some say that I might have to flip the inductive clamp around; some say that I should use an auxiliary battery to power the light; and some say that I should hook the black lead on the negative terminal and the red lead to a ground.  Anybody got any experience with this?

By the way, my research indicates that some later D10/12 have a timing pointer on the timing cover and a timing mark on the crankshaft pulley.  Mine doesn't have this feature.

I used an auxiliary 12V battery to power mine when checking timing on 6v Cub w/ positive ground

Standard procedure in any strobe light is to use a separate battery to power it. The ignition pulse will trigger it.

I have owned that exact same model timing light for 50 years.  DO NOT reverse the polarity connections to the battery!  My original TL was gracefully replaced by Sears with that admonition 49.5 years ago..
