I want to know what the best garden tractor Allis Chalmers made from around post1970s , i have a 712 shuttle that is an absolute beautiful tractor. Next i want to buy the absolute Cadillac of allis garden tractors , any suggestions of what i should get ????

Popularity contest in this area would be 712 Hydro BUUUUTTT Cadillac would be 720 hands down.

I've got a 917h that I've had for many years. It has a mower deck, a front dozer blade, a rota-tiller and a snow thrower + tire chains. I've also got a 720h with a loader on it. I've got a Simplicity that is just like the 917, but a V-2 engine, that I put the mower deck off to the left side to mow under the many pine trees with low hanging limbs in our yard. I put an electric motor on that deck, and power that motor with a belt driven generator mounted on the rear.

917-H hands down! ---- all cast iron rears, and limited slip diffy. --- only problem is no power steering on them!

Tuff to answer as AC made really good lawn/garden tractors in the 70’s, 80’s. I have a 917 and 2-720’s. They are both built like tanks but the 720 wins it hands down. Everything is built heavier on the 720. The weakness of the 917H is the deck. Although a good deck it is a stamped deck and not made of a heavy enough gauge of metal in my opinion. It does rust through, mine is full of wields and patches. But, it has mowed a lot of acres and is still used. Every implement for a 720 is built with the same heavy duty materials. The snowthrower, rear tiller, front blade, sickle mower, belly mower are all built extremely. Well. They got it right with the 720, except no power steering. Would be an awesome machine if it had it. I like them both and they still get a lot of use on my place and our farm. My vote is the 720. They made the same no power steering mistake with the 5015, another good tractor.

Is the difference between the hydro and the shuttle the transmission? And if so how does the hydro work ? Does it still have the 4 gears and it can pick what one to use or does it use one big gear ?

I'd vote 720 as well..
Although, the Sovereign with power steering is hard to beat as far as creature comforts. Just not heavy duty enough for real dirt moving, etc..

Since Dad had a dealership from 1967 - 1977, I've driven and used all of them from that era. I would give the nod to the 720. But, for nice looks and doing a good job of mowing, I liked the AC 312 w/hydro and 42" deck. No power steering but it was fun to operate.

My vote would be the 900 series tractors. I have hydros and a 6 speed. They are both very durable, tough, and easy to run.

I would think the 620/720 Tractors myself would be the top dog. Like Rob said, they're built like tanks. A GT that weighs a tick over 800 lbs with no implements on it is no light weight that's fir' sure. Start hanging implements on it and you have a thousand pound GT! LOL! A phone call to Steve or Mike Brown will probably net you a power steering setup for it to. I'm thinking going that route with my 620.... Steve@B&B

As for power steering or lack thereof... "Poor Man's Power Steering" really does work quite well.
