Is one color harder to cover than the other? Bring out the orange better? I noticed there is grey on my d-14 and I'm priming my ca in red. Any differance or is it preference?

In my opinion the red is harder to cover since it blends in with the red better. I have gotten hooked on grey PPG epoxy primer. I have that on my trailer and the paint has been scraped off and left the primer behind!

I like the gray for some reason, if you have thin top coat it does not seem to show up as much.

when we painted our daughter's closet doors pink (she's 5, so it's allowed), we were told to tint the primer grey for best results w/ the pink paint. don't know if orange would follow the same rule, but since others prefer grey also, maybe it does.

I have painted over both red and gray and to to you the truth I see no differance, this is with the low end urethane automotive paint like Omni, Nason, or Shopline. What is more important is that its all the same color before you top coat it. I found that out when I started using gray surfacers over red primers and Id end up with a bit of both showing. It's not that it cant be covered, it takes one more coat and in this day and age thats a lot of money. As for bringing out the orange I cant say? I have painted over both and cant tell the differance.

I was always told to use gray under light color paint and red for dark colors by my grandfather who was an auto body guy from the old days. I've used gray for any color paint but have always tended to only use red or black for dark colors based on what he taught me. Not really sure if it makes a difference. Maybe paint has changed over the years and it used to make a difference in the past.
Other people I know alternate colors of primer when applying successive layers of body filler in dents. This way they can tell how much filler they have sanded off by which color primer shows. The color of the last layer before painting wins.
