Just getting started. I’m certainly out of practice.
I’m used to 25-06 and large primers.
I’ve had a lot of trouble with the small rifle primers. I have a Lee Auto prime hand held primer tool. Not the case with the small primers.
You change trays for big to small and the small didn’t want to feed. I finally cleaned and polished the chute and got it working.
Then about half the brass I have had a crimp so I had to buy a tool and team the primer pockets. I run it through every round for just in case. Takes time.
I was able to latch on to a large amount of primers and a little powder. I got some nice Sierra HP hunting bullets to load in these. I have much more brass than bullets and powder .

Yep, working with primer pockets takes time, I've never reloaded 223 but have a target rifle in 6.8-284, and I have to reform 6.5-284 brass then neck turn for runout and the infamous donut, then I clean the flash hole for burrs, clean primer pockets, and of course camfir and deburr neck.  Usually sort brass for weight but if you buy good brass that's normally not a problem.  It becomes a monotonous process but if you get a routine it's not too bad.

If your using fired brass you might want to bend a paper clip and check for case head separation at the bottom inside of case, just for safety.

Should add I use a RCBS hand primer and some primers into certain cases just push hard as hell.  If your primer pocket tool has a camfir(sp) on it that will help pushing, of course if you cutting off a crimp it probably does.

Have dealt with Crimped Primer Pockets on 7.62x51 5.56 and .06 cases, my .50 BMG cases were all factory crimped so takes a machine. a REAL Machine to clean/ream pockets then set primers so I used to buy reprocessed/primed brass.

Used to be a significant volume of surplus/recovered/reprocessed 7.62(308) 5.56 and .223 brass but that has disappeared over the last decade.  Looked and could not purchase any small rifle primers here, dealers have waiting lists for those and qualified powders.

shot my .50bmg Sat**day.  I got it on the paper at 100 yards.  Six shots was enough for me.  My two friends did not want to shoot it!!

Thad, what made you decide on the .223?
Reloading is a very calming hobby.  I used to spend HOURS and days doing it, but not so much any more.  Of course I don't shoot as much as I used to either.  It got really spendy now a days.  Like everything, prices seem to climb with the passing of time.  I've still got lots of primers, powder and bullets.  The problem now is brass.  It's getting harder to find and $$$$.
HAVE FUN, but be safe.

Ted I built a pair of 223 rifles is why. They work well when I go out west to call coyotes. I thought at the time ammo would be cheap and plentiful.😂😂😂
I been reloading 25-06 for several years.
I’ve found the small primers a bit more difficult and some things more tedious but I’m getting back in to the swing. I have lots of brass.
What I consider a lot may not be a lot to some, but it’s a plenty to keep me going for a while.
The bullets I use are a bit expensive but they shoot much better than the cheap ammo I’ve tried.

I have never tried reloading any shells. I guess I never shot enough to find the need. Does look to be a nice hobby. and building/ rebuilding reloading fits right in with not being wasteful. and also working up your own loads. Pictures???
Regards,
 Chris

Hey Thad,
I download mine from phone to PC, then 'Edit' them into a Size the Forum can accept.  Usual size is 3264 x2448 pixels from Phone to PC, I reduce that to 1/4 size 816 x 612 pixels and they load just fine.

You need a different Brake if kicks that hard.

I built my Own, one Clockable "Tank Style" the first one we built was Full Diameter, GREAT on Recoil but brutal for throwing debris off the bench.

The dimensions of the Ports, one to the other are Same Release area.  The one on the rifle has 4 7/16"(w) by 1"(t) ports to either side, the interior of the Brake is 1.325" from last barrel thread to 1/2" before end of muzzle on brake.  1" 24TPI barrel and Brake Threads.

They ARE Large and Heavy, add to reduction in Barrel Harmonics as well.  Even a fourteen year old fired mine, Negligible impact.

What style is your Rifle?

What I determined from reading up on these is you NEED Open area inside the Brake to allow the Muzzle Blast to Balloon, then an impingement surface at Outlet end to stop the Balloon Bubble and force it to expel from the sides.

Mine will barely rock you 3" back each shot, NO Muzzle rise.

BTW, I shoot no less than 500 yards, at any Under little more than a stray rock can send a Ricochet BACK to you.  A typical BMG round loosed at a Hillside 600 yards away ricochets up to a Mile, Documented. 648 grains of rolling Ugly!!
