| Going to KC today and finally gonna make a point to stop at what ever is left of the old Gleaner factory anyone know the address ? |

| After poking around on Google, it comes up with 627 So Cottage, Independence, Mo. The picture for that address doesn't look like it could have been an assembly plant? Then again, maybe it's just one building in a complex and it's hard to say if it's all still there. Good Luck. |

Agco wanted to expand and build new but the church put a stop to it. It was a major loss to Independence when the plant moved to Hesston. | I'll begin this with a disclaimer because I may be wrong. The Mormon Church of Independence is not the Mormon Church of Salt Lake City. The Church in Independence is the RLDS-Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints now know as Community of Christ. It is a spin-off from the LDS (Latter Day Saints of Salt Lake) Their world HQ is in Independence and they have considerable real estate holdings there and wield a lot of influence in the town. So it's quite possible they did own the property. So this is just a guess on my part wanting to try and clarify the matter. We do have Mormon churches in the area but their land holdings are probably limited. Don't ask me about the religious differences. Anyone know when Gleaner first came to Independence? |

| Heres some pics i took of the factory, it all makes sence with morman church, as the first pic is one of a church or something up the hill from Gleaner, the complex is a series of seperate buildings but im sure connected in the inside- its home to a few small businesses, but looking very run down , and itrs right in the middle of railroad tracks , which back in the day they used a bunch |

| In the part of town it was in it was getting pretty difficult getting out of there with a loaded truck. Narrow streets, low overpasses. A fair distance to the interstate. Knew a driver that really didn't like going in there to pick up a combine at Independence. Yeah remember the industrial park sign. Just down the hill from Harry Truman house. |

You are right about the church. It is not the same group as the Mormans in Salt Lake City. They were the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They have recanted some of Joseph Smith's teachings and renamed themselves Commuity of Christ Church. Yeah, I took the tour in the fall of 86 when I was at the FFA Convention, they had started with the green stripe combines, what a bummer...

The photo of the white-washed “gleaner combines” building reminds me of Norm’s book talking about the research of the rotory development where testing involved a Gleaner G combine setup with two GM350 v8s. One v8 powered the test rotor mounted out front like a header. |

| I went on a tour of the Gleaner plant in December of 1980. John Lennon was killed during our trip. The Independence Plant was surrounded by small houses, the streets were narrow, and the buildings were old. The trip to the "caves", or limestone mines, where A-C had a parts depot, was very interesting. Our tour bus rolled right inside the caves, drove on for quite a distance, and I was amazed at the underground operations. Huge! Bill Hoeppner is a wealth of information on the Gleaner works. Worked there for a long time. |
