A guy is selling some chains that measure roughly 8 ft long by 20 inches wide. Can someone tell me what tire size they'd fit?

If the chains are 8' long, the diameter would be 30" on the tire.

Calvin is correct, but (I really hate to disagree with a guy like Calvin)....

The circumference of a circle equals pie (3.14) x radius, or pie x diameter. An 8' (96') long side chain would equal a 30" diameter circle.

My experience is that side chains run about half way up the side wall of the tire. You don't say how wide the tires are, but there are charts that give (brand specific) outside tire diameters for different sizes.

If the chains are the correct width for your tires, running down a few inches from the outside of the tire, my estimate would be that these chains would fit a a 26" or 28" (maybe even 24") tire. Don't forget that you lose a little length coupling the chains.

I was curious if they'd work on a 16.9,14.9,or 13.6-28 tire.

It'd probably be close enough that if they DIDN'T, and you had a few scrap lengths, you could 'doctor' them to suit.

Sometimes, the WIDTH of the tire has a greater impact, as the sides fit around a smaller radius... naturally, that's how the stay on the tire... it's the cross-pieces that wrap around the outside, and how FAR they have to wrap, in order to be workable.

As the tire gets wider, the wrap becomes flatter, reducing the ultimate OD.  Let's use your 20" width measurement as an example...  That would add another 10" radius to the chain's reach IF... the tire was an inch wide.  IF you were to place that on a 10" wide tire, that'd leave you only 5" of sidewall on each side... which makes the 30" side effectively shorter than the 1" tire.

Curt (WF Owner)  You are correct. I said the diameter of the 8' chain would be 30" so the chains could be correct for a 13.6 or 14.9 x 26" tire.

Irratates the hell out of me people can’t just advertise what size tire they came off.

Sometimes they have no idea. I recently went to an estate sale and they had a couple sets of ring chains. They weren't sure which tractor they came off or even if they fit a tractor he had when he died.

First of all, I can't tell you what those chains will fit but someone posted a link to a chain mfg. that had a chart with that info.

If the link is still good, try this:       https://lacledechain.com/product/nu-way-tractor-chains/" rel="nofollow - https://lacledechain.com/product/nu-way-tractor-chains/

There are many variables to consider.
Are they straight "ladder" or double ring style.....there might be a little difference.
The size of the links has a tremendous effect.
Also, the number of cross links makes a difference......most chains have cross links every 5 links of side chain but more rare, are the ones with cross links every 3rd side link.

Anyway, I have a set of ladder chains that fit the 13.6X28 on my WD very nicely.
They measure: 126" X 20". The cross links are located every 5th side link. Each side link measures 2-1/2" long.

The chains you are looking at are probably too short for you; 30" is a lot.

As another example: The double ring chains for my WD-45 with 14.9X28 tires are only 108" long, but they have 28" cross chains. They also fit very nicely.
