I have an Ariens hedge trimmer, I think is manufactured by Tanaka, problem no fire to spark plug.  Have disconnected the wire to stop switch, still no fire.  Was going to check points ...No points.. checked the coil where stop wire is connected to coil, shows grounded to laminated iron core.  I think the coil has an electronic ignition integral to the coil.  Am I checking correct, and does the continuity from stop switch wire terminal to ground indicate a bad coil?  Thanks, Tim

I would say that you have a bad ignition module.

I agree with DAVE... Problem is probably the  "internal point / condenser" type thingy... Here is a CHEAP drawing of the old systems... Note that one side of the coils is GROUNDED so , YEA, your kill wire would show continuity to ground when disconnected from the switch... I dont think that is the problem... but EVERYTHING is one piece
 anyway.

Thanks for the replies, I kind of thought module might be bad, so looked for one online, the Tanaka parts said wasn't ordered often and should call or email for them to check stock.  Thanks, Tim

You might be able to buy a Bauer battery powered trimmer from Horrible Fright for what that ignition module costs. Just a thought. Hate to promote that chinese stuff but Bauer seems to have some good products. I bought one for my bride and she likes it. I have one on a pole that fits on my Stihl power head that I use.

ignition module is dead! ---standard on the electronic modules on everything ---wish they still had points so you could work on them.

Makes it too easy, anyone can then fix them.

I thought all the smaller engines used capacitive discharge now? If you can't see an actual coil, could be that is what you have?

Had that happen to my Stihl chainsaw this summer. No spark even with kill wire removed. Ordered coil module and back in business.

Update....after the comments, I decided to reinstall the module just to be sure.  Used a folded paper to set gap at flywheel, was I surprised with a good spark.  reassembled, cranked it up and cut for a couple minutes, stopped running,  restarted after a few minutes repeated same, run die, finally the light came on....running out of gas, bought a new in tank fuel filter hasn't stopped since.   Thanks for the response,  Tim
