| Have a 1954 wd 45 converting it to a 12 volt system. I would like to install a 12 volt starter with a solenoid could use some help if anyone knows of a replacement starter. |

your starter will work OK on 12 volts.. MOST people dont bother to have them rewound.... if your starter has a push switch mounted to it, you can make a bracket and have it HELD CLOSED all the time , or you can have it removed by a shop and a STUD put in its place so you can connect the battery cable to it.... thru the solenoid. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

Lew, Welcome, And good suggestions from Steve. Yes the 6 volt starter should work fine for a long time. It will just crank a lot faster. Engages a little faster and more fire too! I have done several of these conversions and they all preform/start well. No regrets. Good luck. If your going to a alternator then the old wiring might need to be changed out along with the gage and switch. Basically a custom wiring system needs to be built. | I have always been a fan of KIS. Keep it simple. The factory set up has one wire with two connections. One on the battery the other on the starter. The starter lever can't get much handier for the operator. Adding switches and wires just adds to failures down the road. I have removed many of these modifications because they don't pass the test of time. Just my opinion. |

X2, Lon!! The WD45 I sold this summer had that problem, wires everywhere and none working. I shouldn't say none, it did start and run. The four WD's/45's left here are all 12 volt on the simple plan, all work great!

My D14 would grind most times trying to start the 6v starter on 12v. I finally got tired of it and took the starter to the rebuild shop. He switched it to 12v and it has worked great ever since. No more grinding. Good luck. ------------- D14, D17, 5020, 612H, CASE 446 |

My D14 has had 12 volts going through the 6 volt starter for over 35 years. I have several tractors that were 6 v starters and now run on 12v.... No problems.. I also have good MAGS / wires / carb, so the tractors startup in 2 revolutions of the motor. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

3 of the 4 D-14s I've got are 6 volt starters, 12 volt batteries. Always start (if you open the shutoff...) , no 'grinding gear' issues. I did replace 'Troy's' ringgear.It was chewed,more likely PO didn't have GOOD 6v battery back then. ------------- 3 D-14s,A-C forklift, B-112 Kubota BX23S lil' TOOT( The Other Orange Tractor) Never burn your bridges, unless you can walk on water |

I change em' over to 12V with relay. All new guts inside along with a rewound arm. Runs about $350. including the relay ready to roll. Running 12V's through 6V field coils makes the Starter motor violent. Some people have had success sticking with the 6V Starter motor, most haven't with cracked nose cones, worn out ring gears, etc. Your train of thought is correct moving to 12 with a relay...
