Should I repair or replace the starter on my 8070? Drive won't stay engaged now with the cold weather. Any comments on replacement gear reduction starters , good or bad? Where did you purchase yours? Thanks for your input. This site is the BEST!

If the rest of the starter is good you can replace or clean the starter drive.

Do a search on Google for 7000 series gear reduction starter. I did this to a 7060 and it may help you. Can't get it to pull up here for some reason.

I recently done one on a 6080 with a newer high torque and thats the way to go, the rebuild on an old style is 3/4 the price of the new one- just my expirence,

Just put a new gear reduction one on two days ago from carroll implement here in north central Iowa.  $530.  Turned it over well and suppose to have more torque.  A lot easier to put on also( bolt on block side of starter I could get a socket on the new one, not my old one).

I put one on my Ford 555 backhoe last spring, it spins it over so fast it hardly has to run.  Will see how it does in the cold but so far I'm very pleased with it.  I found it on the internet, about $100.  Hard to beat that price.

While gear reductions are nice , I sure like the original starters, I have two 8050's 0ne with 11000+ hrs the other 8400hrs and both starters are untouched.
