I have a 1955 CA that is supposed to have an air cleaner with the clamp style oil cup.
Anyone put a custom air cleaner on a CA or any other tractor? one with a paper filter?

I've seen the top half of a cone shaped ones with a hose going to the carb. I think pullers normally use this kind. Might go over to the pulling section and ask where they get them.

Some pullers use the K&N clamp-on style filters. You could gut the original filter housing and adapt a paper filter that will fit inside. A good auto parts store can help you find a filter. The snot-nosed kid behind the counter with a computer won't have a clue.

It's impossible to adapt an oil bath air cleaner to work with a paper filter! Sure, you can make a filter fit in there, but will it actually FILTER the air? Not likely! If you look at the housing of a correct dry filter, you can see how dirty air gets pulled in, circles around the outside of the filter with clean air coming out of the center. Because an oil bath air cleaner was not DESIGNED to use that type of filter, the air movement will not allow it to work properly.

While this video shows how a precleaner bowl works, the dry air cleaner is similar in that it uses centrifugal force to separate dirt particles.

Don, there was a guy on here who did the K&N and had great pics on here years ago. I'll see if I can find it for you.
I couldn't find the 'original' post, but I did find a newer one with pics. It has that "PhotoBucket" crap across the face of the pics, but you can see what he did. Ed has passed since he did this and wrote the articles. HTH
