Subject: Power shift transmission

| Good morning, I'm new to this forum because I have just embarked on the Allis Chalmers journey, I bought I black belly 7060, it runs great, but its stuck in one gear and won't shift to any other gear. can someone give me some guidance or past experience on what could be causing this... it moves in that gear but the shifter won't move at all. Thank for your help in advance. |

| In my opinion they are the tractors to have today. Quieter cabs/engines and creature comforts are the only real improvements today. |

| Swing out the batteries. Disconnect the end of the control cable from the arm on the Power Shift valve. Now, sit in the seat and see if the lever will fully shift from Reverse to 6th gear. If the lever now shifts, the problem is inside the valve body. Must remove it to see what has happened. |

| Ok, I had time to do some work on the 7060, its seems the ears that connect to the shaft of the transmission weld have broken, therefore instead of pivoting, it moves the shaft forward and backwards, some pivot point were frozen up also, a couple of days of deep creep penetrating oil and they finally broke loose, also the cables don't seem to move either, it appears the shaft moves in and out, I'm thinking to go into the higher ranges when shifting. Is this correct? am I headed in the right direction? |

| Sounds like you are describing a power director tractor. the ear is on the transmission shift cover and yes, they do break. Get it rewelded and free up those ball joints on the rods and all of the pivot points too. |

behind the battery box but I have the floor plate off also, so I can sit on the seat and actually see the shaft on top of the transmission move back and forth, when I bought it the person said it was stuck in 3rd gear, as a matter of fact I need education on shifting this tractor, the range selector says 124 on the top and the bottom it has 35R?

| Sounds like a plan, so you mean I didn't waste 2500.00. also where do you adjust the clutch petal, its friction point is on the bottom and it grinds going into high or low gear. |

| Your 7060 tractor has the standard equipment 20-speed POWER DIRECTOR transmission, not the optional 12-speed POWER SHIFT transmission. |

As stated, a Power Director, not Powershift. You do have two buttons on the floor that give you a hi/lo shift on the go within any gear you have chosen in the console shift. As for shifting the gears, when you put your foot on the clutch, the floor buttons will automatically go to low. You MUST come to a complete stop before shifting anything in the console. Grinding can be because you're still rolling, cold oil, low oil, or trans brake adjustment. |

| Transmission shifted only when STOPPED, not on the roll. Trans brake issue is probably the two bushings on the clutch valve fork being worn out. Remove black side panel under the clutch pedal to access. There can be no "free-play" in the clutch pedal stroke when the engine is off. If there is 3 inches of free-play, that means you are 3 inches short of hitting the trans brake at the bottom. Adjust clutch cable to provide zero free-play once you know the fork bushings are good. Spray WD40 all over that fork area when done. |

Williamhead, welcome to the AC forum and thank you for saving another great Allis-Chalmers 7060 workhorse. What year is your 7060 Black Belly - built 1978-1981? It's serial number is stamped into its rear end housing just above it's PTO. Year built per Serial numbers are as follows: 1978: 6001-6788, 1979: 6789-7692, 1980: 7693-8441, 1981: 8442-9142. Per Mack's prior statement, earlier versions, 7000 series (7040,7060,7080)Maroon Belly, were built 1974-1977. These had their Power Director 20 speed trans gear shift in the floor, under the dash. Heres a photo of the 7080 series maroon belly tractor exterior. Notice how their cab's front lower cultivator-view windows have a protruding metal brow that mimics the hood angle. The later black belly 7000 series lost that cab brow & have a flat front of cab. Lower windows are still there but front of cab frame is straight up/down. These early 7000 series transmission gear shift was located under the dash in the floor. Only their Hi/Lo range shifter was located in the side console.   Your later version, Black Belly 7060 should have a "T"handle for gear shifting its Power Director 20 speed transmission. Unlike the earlier maroon belly models, the later built black belly models moved the gear shift from under the dash, over into their side console. Heres a picture of black belly trans cutaway with a small side insert photo of t-handle. Sorry, it's not a very clear insert photo of t-handle. Anyway the Hi/Lo range shift lever is located on the right side of T-handle gear shift lever in the side console. Second picture shows your Hi/Lo range cutaway positioned in front of tractor's rear differential. Please note that both the T-handle & Hi/Lo shift levers used metal flex cables incased within a tough plastic flex housing. Over decades these cables become worn, especially their connection pins, yokes, etc. I believe new cables are still available at Agco.   |
