I was just curious if any of you do any big round bales with your D17 tractor? If so, what baler make and model? 4 ft wide bale or 5 ft wide bale? Flat or hilly ground? How many remotes for the hydraulics do you need? Monitor on the baler? Do you also bale cornstocks? Back when I had cows, here, I baled with a D-12(III) pulled a Hesston 5530, did very well, everywhere, baling anything. It needed one set of remotes, to open and close the rear door. No monitor. I'd say a 17 would pull a 540 or 550 Hesston, no problems! Oh, and these Hesstons were re-badged by IH, and NI, and still in production, IIRR... ------------- Source: Babylon Bee. Heck no!!!!! Our baler is rated for 120 hp minimum. I can make the 8030 snort with our 4x5. Neighbor baled with a 160 40 years ago but it was a little 410 Deere baler. The only D series that can make big bales is a D21. | Never tried a D 17, on ocassion used a 175 D on a 6x5 baler, fine on flat ground a bit light for hilly ground. |

| I have a Vermeer 504 silage I Baler that makes 4‘ wide x 5’ dia bales and use it on the 185’s mainly for the hydraulic PTO. I have ran it on the 175d without a struggle in dry hay. I think it requires 50hp min. It does not pull any load in dry hay until it is at full dia, meaning if there is a hp issue, you could simply cut off a little smaller. I prefer the monitor however, I also have a switch in case I would need to change tractors in hurry. This just means I have to watch it tie and turn the switch off and on. Most balers have the option for electric tie or hydraulic— I would stay away from the manual tie. If I only had a d17, I would use it, may not want to go down steep hills loaded would be my biggest issue. You need at a min ,is one dual outlet for pressure on the rear door. The other downside is the dust is close to you on the smaller tractors. I have baled anything that can be cut with this Baler. |

| So, at a minimum, I think you'd want a D-17 with 16.9 x 28 rear tires with fluid, making the tractor weigh at least 5500 lbs. More weight the better for safety. |

| There's matches for a 17, and older New Holland 846 would be perfect, not the prettiest bales but they work , 4 by 5 weigh around 1000 lbs a bale |

Depending on the baler yes you could round bale with a D17. We have an older 5x5 Vermeer belt baler and an old New Holland 5x5 chain baler. Both just need one two way remote for the lift gate; have manual twine arms so no monitor or electrics to deal with. I'm sure some of the new big balers would be too much with hydraulics and or hp for a D17 but we have baled many acres running either baler with our 1947 Oliver 88 or a Long 560 so I'm sure a good D17 would be able to run them. |

I have used a McKee 4 by 5 baler with hydraulic tie that required 2 sets of remotes on my Series 2 D17.A little under powered with the original engine but it got the job done .The tractor now has a combine engine and the extra power makes a difference. My Claas Rollant 62 makes a similar size bale but needs more horsepower so I usually run it with my DA7085.

| Once bailed for the neighbor using his baler and my tractor. He had a Vermeer M baler and I had my White 105. That baler pushed my white around pretty good. Wouldn't want anything smaller for sure. I usually bale with my 8030 and I have a Hesston 856A. It is automatic and only needs PTO, no hydraulics. Baler has a pump and own hydraulics that runs from the PTO. I don't think my D17 would handle my 856A very well plus I got rolling hills. |

| We run a Case 8430/Hesston 540 with 175D, 4 x 4 bales, handles it no effort, groans a bit w/full bale on a grade. Only tractor we've ever used on it. |

Hydraulics would be the major issue unless yours is a series 4 D17. You can put a 2 way valve on a D17 Series I,I had a WD45 Diesel with a 262 gas in it and a double acting valve.Used it to bale with a NH 851,a little slow on the hydraulics but got the job done.Also to open and shut the baler gate no reason you couldn't mount a 12V electric over hydraulic unit on your D17 like lift gates and old wreckers used to use. |

| The installation of a single spool two-way valve to the left side of the seat wouldn't cost more than $200 for the valve and hoses. If the tractor has fluid in the tires, a 4 x 4 baler sounds like it would be fine. I think 800 to 1,000 lb bales would be as big as I'd want to go. |
