I have a pre89 R50 and got a better grain head for it and it must have come off a R62, I have moved the reel drive pump over and was wondering if it was necessary to move the sheet metal covers in the throat over or just the spiral extensions over.  My corn head doesn't have any blocking and I had no problem with it last year but I didn't know if I could get away with the grain head, and it's not like I running hundereds of acres through it, any ideas? Thanks.

If you don't cover the ends of the slats with shielding, you stand a very good chance of wrapping the feed chain in soybeans, especially if they are tough/green. Also, move the auger forward as far as possible (add half links to the drive chain) and up off of the floor 3/4" or more for the best feeding in soybeans.

That’s what I was afraid of,I have been wondering how come they shrunk the feeder house on those but the N5 was the same as a N6 or was it

N-5-6-7 were all wider at about 38 inches. The R-40/R-50 were only 28 inches wide and when in prototype were called the N-3/N-4.

I think I know what you are asking about. Dad put a 500 head on the N6. Beans rapped up on the square tube in the upper end of the lower feeder house. Somewhere we saw a picture of some tins the carried the crop just past the chains. Put them on and they made all of the difference.

I had a N6 years ago and that happened once in really tall tangled beans but never had any problem again but for the life of me I can’t figure out why they shrunk the feeder house on the 50 but the N5 wasn’t,pretty much same size machine but I noticed the difference between my old N6 in beans been almost fifteen years ago but the 50 comes nowhere close to the power it had

You obviously didn't know what you were buying. Models R-6/R-60/R-62 replace an N-6. An R-50 doesn't really replace an N-5. It replaces an L-2/L-3.  An R-40 replaces and M-2/M-3.

IMO a stock 50 can't keep pace with a late L2 or an L3. Also it seems there is a big gap between an R50 and an R60. I think, in hindsight, they should have kept the N5 size along with introducing the R40/50. But I ain't much of a bean counter and the bean counters always get a say.

I also remember a customer at the dealership had went from an N5 and 8 row corn head to an R50 and also an 8 row corn head. I think they were disappointed. Anyone who did that had to be somewhat disappointed.

Any R-50 in good condition and set-up properly will outwork any L-2/L-3 in corn, especially if there are ANY SIDEHILLS.

I forgot about hills. Our hills are hardly hills. Is "set up properly" stock or some mods besides changing forward and reverse bars?

Helical bars from an R-52 cage and they must be in very good condition.  One extra short helical to transition over the top of the feed chain opening to the separator side. This takes a little effort to get it in there but makes sure everything makes the slide from right to left. Two reverse bars on the far left side. One reverse bar in the center placed at 180 degrees to the two on the left. One reverse bar on the right 180 degrees to the one in the center. Every other wire removed from the rear half of the concave. Every other wire removed from the separator grate. 4 inch tall dividers on the chaffer that extend to the front of the grain pan. Square tip 1 5/8" corn chaffer only for corn and beans.  A rubber flap blocker under the back edge of the sieve to the grain pan ( not to the shoe bottom !!). The shoe and elevator are full all the time and the engine/rotor never even work. Fuel use is very efficient. Rotor speed 300-320 in corn.

I never heard you mention the rubber flap under the back edge of the sieve before..... I've got to start copying down what you recommend. What does that do? Does this rubber flap and reverse bar configuration apply to a long shoe R52? I knew about the short helical over the feed chain.... I need to do that yet. Can that helical be put in without removing the rotor? I have the square tip 1-5/8 chaffer. My L2 had the 4" tall dividers but my 52 doesn't. Would you extend the bars into the discharge on a 52? I assume so.

You combine gurus, that's how I refer to you and others here when the topic comes up with my farming friends and family, you combine gurus are just a wealth of information!

Rubber flap (or whatever you want to make it out of) between rear bottom of sieve to grain pan blocks any grain from spilling over into the return. It also forces more air up thru the sieve and chaffer.  Tall dividers all the way to the front of the grain pan are a MUST on that series of combine. I never extended rotor bars into discharge area. I do all rotors like this. My concave never plugs with leaves early in the season because of it. Our rotor loss in corn is near zero all the time. I have no need to want to change anything more. Short helical requires pulling rotor to drill a hole and get that thing secure. Edit: forgot about the tailings elevator chute extension I made to move the return closer to the center instead of all the way to the right.

Thanks Dr. I hope I am allowed the time to do some of this. My corn sample tested 34% two days ago so it will be two or three weeks.... no beans this year.

Thanks for all the help, I knew the R50 would be smaller than my old N6 I had years ago I just assumed that it would be comparable with the old N5 since it had a smaller cage and grain tank was about the same and both were about 190hp I guess that’s why the feeder house is smaller since they made the 50 a larger 40 by increasing grain tank and power

Hey DrAllis, does the reverse bat set up apply to CDF rotor too? I know someone with an R52 and CDF. Thanks
