I was operating my 190XT near dark the other evening and turned my lights on. After a few minutes I noticed my ammeter light was getting brighter. As I looked closer the inside "dial" face was melting it seems. I turned off the lights and now the black inside portion of the "face" is crumbled up at the bottom of the gauge.
Is the inside of these plastic? This is the OE AC gauge
Or is it paper?

Tractor is stored inside and has not been in the rain for a long time. But it was a very humid evening.

I would think you could have an overcharging problem due to a Battery starting to sulfate, or the problem could be right at the Ammeter itself. Pull a draw test on the Battery first thing. See if its got a cell going away in it and is putting even a bigger load on the system other than the Headlights. Headlights don't use much power unless you have a grounding problem on the feed side. Like I said, check your power source first, then check Alternator output with a Voltmeter, inspect the Voltage regulator, then inspect to see if the Ammeter has the issue. Something in the system is overheating that Ammeter for some reason, or might be the Ammeter itself... HTH
