| Is there any way to fix a starter solenoid that won't engage the bendix plunger? I jumped power from the battery terminal to the start terminal and it just hums a little bit. Is the only solution a new solenoid? |

Hey Creston,,,good to hear from you,,,you been havin so much fun elsewhere you ain't been here,,,,  It depends which kind of solenoid you got. I have taken apart the GM style solenoids and rotate the contacts inside and make em last another 50,00 miles but the fender mounted styles like the Fords use are not repairable. As a rule, the solenoids either work or they don't. The humming may be an issue with the brushes or a short of the armature to case ground. I'm not much help,,,,,,,

there are two studs on the solenoid.. If you JUMP them together, the bendix should pull in and the starter spin.... if all you get is a HUM, you have additional problems with the bendix / starter. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

Ford style ... drill out the 4 rivets, 'dress' the contacts or flip over, use 6-32 N+B to reassemble the unit... the 'trick' to ALL solenoid reapirs is to be 100% sure the contact MATE totally flat... alway wondered how big a cap you'd need to quench the inrush current arc. I suppose that's on the web somewhere.......

Yeah Steve I can jump the two studs and the starter will take off spinning, but the bendix doesn't pull in. Hey Joe! Yeah I been busy on a custom harvest crew, but I'm back now. Haven't been able to log on much in a while. It is on a Ford engine, but it's a Lucas starter/solenoid.  |

| Looking around on eBay, the solenoid is $40, and a whole new starter with solenoid is $111. I guess it's a pretty common unit, used on most of the Ford thousand series. |

Oh the good old days back in the 80's NH swather with a Ford 172 diesel. Nice running engine if you could get it to crank with the Lucas starter. Finally found a local rebuilt that worked pertty well.If you been having trouble with hard/slow starting
go whole hog and replace it all. |

If I have that problem I will. I haven't got the engine to crank at all yet, since the bendix hasn't been kicking in. Trying to get this thing running, and it's been sitting since about '92.

so the bendix is part of the solenoid ? You know that LUCAS was called the "PRINCE OF DARKNESS" for the last 80 years for a GOOD REASON !! If there is an alternative as DAVE said, it might be worth it ! ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

| If you can get the solenoid off the starter (you may have to pull the starter to do it), You may be able to pull the plunger out of the solenoid. It might be dirty, or rusty from setting, and cleaning an a light wipe with oil well make it go. The Bendix might be stuck on the shaft and not moving as well. Have you tried tapping, in a technical manner of course, on the solenoid and rear of the starter housing behind the solenoid while trying the starter? |

Another one for the M50 starters, part # B5007-018 for $34. That's a good website, Paul! Mine must be the M50 starter, because that's the solenoid that was on mine. Jim...I've got it off the machine and tried all of your suggestions. No luck. With the solenoid off, I can reach in and move the linkage with 1 finger, and the bendix slides smooth as silk.

I agree. I ordered one, so it should be here Monday. If the starter gives fits down the road I'll put in a gear reduction starter. Thanks guys!

Hey Shameless! I was with a guy named Mel Gossen, a big-time Gleaner guy from here in Oklahoma....I wouldn't consider going on a green crew! As to photos...his policy is no hired workers are allowed to carry electronic devices in the field (causes wrecks and other mess-ups), so no cell phones, etc. But my Polaroid isn't electronic....but I can't readily post those photos here, and I only took 3 or 4 with it. And the old Gleaner reputation continues...at the elevators they told us several times we had the cleanest wheat. He runs four 2016 S97s, and they have definitely proved their durability. I heard they've ran approximately 2,000,000 bushels total of wheat, corn, milo, and lentils through each machine. Replace a few wear parts occasionally, and they just keep going!
