Hey Gang

trying to chase out some (ahem) deferred maintenance on this series IV which includes some very scary tie rods. I noticed there is some slop in the pitman arm/swing lever or what allis calls the center steering arm. it's this guy:

I am going to assume that the arm is a bit of a friction fit, and the roll pin does nothing in terms of anything useful other than keep it from falling off, would that be correct?

I started to clean it up (still need more elbow grease) but can't see the pin yet.

the arm is shot, looks like it has had some repairs done to it. I was hoping to possibly drift a new pin in it (when I find it) but i'm thinking the damage is done.

I have a D17 S IV diesel I can rob parts off of, but...it looks like a front end drop to make this happen. not sure I want to take it that far. Roberts tractor seems to feel it's worth 300 beans used...I am beginning to think that D17 diesel is a gold mine in parts

Yes it is common for those to have some slop in. Either the arm or the splined shaft or both are worn. You are correct on the pin doing nothing but holding the arm in place

thank you for the confirmation. I suspected that it may have some slop due to the design. i'm not pulling the front end if there is no reasonable fix.

I have to address my steering U joint before that takes a bigger dump than it already has.

before I order this and get my feelings hurt, what is the "later style steering joint"?

mine is a 67 so i'm not sure. those pins look like they will be fun to remove

just FYI, those  "ARM ASY., steering, center" are case-hardened

a roll pin should fit snug in it. but if it's too loose or if you're worried about it working itself back out, run a heavy wire through the roll pin leaving enough length to tie it off.

BTW, I have a pair of tight tie rods for a D17
PM me if interested.

Replace the roll pin.  A new roll pin will not have any wear spots, so it will take up some of the slop.  You might also want to check the shaft that it sits on.  A sloppy bearing will make the shaft loose as well.

the roll pin is in there, but i'm not sure it would be worth the acrobatics to swap it out. it looks like you *may* be able to do it in place? it's tight, for sure.

I was able to cobble together enough mix-n-match parts from this machine to the diesel and made a good set of tie rods. now I have to order the steering u-joint.

how much assist should this machine have? we also have a fiat 5045 (my FIL kind of despised that machine haha) and that has very "light" what I would call "wheel of fortune" steering, meaning you can pretty much grab the wheel and (almost) spin it until it comes to it's stop points like you were spinning the wheel of fortune

I seem to recall this machine having lighter steering. fluid looks ok, and appears to be ATF as it's red. wondering if I should drain it and put new ATF in, or just drain and use Hy Tran. any thoughts on that?

it has power assist for sure, it just seems "muddy" if that makes sense

5 quarts HyTran is fine.

sounds good. I will run it and get it hot and switch it over
