this fellow is a little behind the times, Microsoft has been 'renting' their products for quite awhile now.
There was some talk a few years back that auto makers was going to stop selling cars altogether, instead they would lease them. I don't know what happened to that idea.
I think the comparison of satellite radio and a heater in the seat is not an apple to apple one. Satellite radio, one is not paying monthly to use it, but rather the product that one is receiving through it, whereas the seat heater is there, you paid for it, but now forced to pay to use it. Of course, the automaker will make the argument that the owner of the car did not pay for it, that the automaker put it in for free in hopes the owner would pay to use it.

Back quite a few years ago we didn't need a seat heater, especially in the back seat....

Man BMW has come a long way in the wrong direction. Got rid of my wife's 1973 2002 in 1992. Had 170K miles and I still took it in every 3000 miles for the free servicing at the BMW dealer. Only thing I payed for the whole time we owned it was a pair of brake pads and a thermostat. Still had the spare parts kit manuals and extra wheels and tires in the trunk when I got rid of it. The Michigan Iron moths had taken their toll or I would have kept it.

OK, on the surface, I don't have a problem with 'value added options' you have to pay for. Tha'ts been around for decades...
If you want a fancy high beam control, you pay BUT a regular system HAS to be offered, for free( well it is a $100k car...).
Since day one, manufactures have offered 'upgrades', generally a one time hit in the pocket. Now clever marketing and accounting departments have a way to get more money from you. Cable TV companies have done it for years...
The problem is in the 'technology'. It's NOT 100% reliable. Consider you've not paid for the 'smart highway cruise' package this month..wife's cruising down the Interstate, the BMW receives an 'update'( all wireless....), pass under a bridge, lose the 'data packet', and the Beemer's computer KILLS power to the steering /braking servo system. The ensuing accident kills wife,2 children and  creates a 15 car pileup....
The same 'tech' that caused this could(should) be used in court to sue BMW.... though it'll never bring back the wife and kids.

for those that think this scenario can't happen.. ever call the Cable company for a missing 'channel' ,and they say 'reset the box' ?

Just got a Ford Notice, our '17 exploder has a map system due for Update.  Maps on a PC update at each use, the Ford system is a $149 will send the USB card to update fee.  Do not generally use electronic maps, wife does, she is toying with the extra expense I am NOT.

As long as there are suckers that will shuck out bucks for things over and over it will continue as well as get worse. Just look what happened with the auctioneers CROOKS. First they started charging a 5% premium to buy something, I'm now seeing that as high as 20%. As P.T. Barnum said "There's a sucker born every minute"

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

You ought to look into Ritchie Brothers auctions.  I brought up a machine that NEVER LEFT their yard in KC as to being re-sold as a New Offering, was told nope different animal, then produced the PRINTED ads of that machine by S/N, machine disappeared off the listings.  Suspicion is happens more than the one caught.
