So hope y’all are farmin’ safely! We just finished 160 acres of gorgeous dry 43 pound kicker bales of high quality horse hay, 6000 of them in 10 days! Yup...mowed, tedded 3x, raked single, raked double, baled, hauled and stacked cut side up. Phew! So my XT and one of our 185’s leak oil front and rear main seals. My question is.....can I fix with new seals by removing the oil pan only? Thanks, Dana

Gee Mack that sounds complicated! There is nothing else wrong with these 2 tractors, is there no remedial help to slow the leaks? What else should I do if I r&r the engines while I’m in there? Thanks! Dana

If your radiators are FULL that is good. If you are near an oil change, try that first. Then, you have to decide if it is bad enough to warrant the repair. The oil leak hurts nothing unless the rear seal gets so bad it soaks the clutch. There is a difference between a leak and a seep.

Well these drips are both about the same; I added a quart to each in like 20 hours. The XT leaks mostly out of the rear and the 185 mostly out of the front.

If only the front is leaking on the 185, that's a pretty easy fix. Actually, the back one is not that hard to do once you get the engine out, It's a good opportunity to check out the clutch while you are at it

I would try the Lucas stuff that Alvin M was talking about. Lucas has some very good products. Personally, if it is only leaking a quart in 20 hours, I would keep adding oil if the Lucas doesn't work.

What are you running for oil in these tractors? Make sure the leaks aren't coming from some other place that makes it look like a main seal? could be an oil pan gasket or the rear mounting plate, or it could even be running down from the valve cover. I know as a pilot and from the looks of your equipment you would like to keep them clean but on tractors that age you could be using a quart in 20 hours without any leaks.

Thats not real bad a quart in 20 hrs, one thing on the rear main seals- make sure you change the big and little O rings on the engine mounting plate- first XT i done i just changed the crank seal put it back together and still leaking , ggrrrr,

I run wolfs Head hd 15-40 diesel synthetic in everything and change filter and oil before 50 hrs or yearly whichever comes first. Im not really sure how I can tell between the main and rear mounting plate???????

mounting plate VS main seal....gotta do the same work to get to them so just do both while apart.

Cant tell if its the rear plate or crank seal but its all right there and cheap to do ,except the spitting part

I'm showing my age here but I didn't know the Wolf's Head oil brand still existed? My first new car back in the 60's came from a franchised Chevrolet dealer who used nothing but that brand and that was in Omaha, NE. At that time they were affording some type of warranty for the engine, not sure how many miles if you used that product. I think they pushed that it was Penn Oil and not from somewhere else. Anyway some brands survive and some don't. Brings back memories.
