My son is trying to get the last of seeding done in my absence, due to my taking a job, and is way behind. He's pulling a 28 foot concord air seeder with the 8550. Yesterday he called me up and said that the tractor quit moving, just as if you stepped on the clutch. Told him to just stop until I get home. Went over to the field to check it out with him after I got home last night. Started it up, it moved probably about 50 feet, then came to a stop. Tried a lower gear and it went a little farther. Had Wyatt watching the shafts through the hinge. He said that both shafts quit turning when it stopped. Just about has to be the torque limiter, not.....? Thanks, Darrel

Does the STEERING work???  Working steering means a good torque limiter  !!  Does the 1800 RPM red lite on the instrument panel work??  If the red lite is "on" and the steering works, your transmission pump has failed.  They are known for having drop box failures. I think splines on a shaft ??

Also, try the range trans in LOW and HIGH.

Tried high and low range both. Did it in both ranges. When it stops, no steering, 1800 rpm light comes on. Darrel

Sounds like the transmission is very low on oil.

Transmission oil level is good. We unhooked it from the concord today. Tried moving it away under its own power. Goes a few feet, and BOTH shafts quit turning when it stops. Step on the clutch and take it out of gear, and the top shafts over a few seconds, goes back up to speed. I pulled him to the edge of the field, and he had steering the whole way....top shaft was turning. darrel

The torque limiter on one of those (which I've never worked on) is a double disc set-up. So, there must be something hooking up some of the time allowing that top driveshaft to turn and then everything works....for a little while. A big job to pull the engine on one of those big tractors for sure.
