looking for some input.. we are baling hay Sunday and asked to neighbor boys to help unload small bales.... prob 1000-1200 bales give or take.. anyone know going rate? been a long time since we had to hire anyone for help thanks.... they are 12 and 15 years of age

Pay them for what they can do. You will be surprised sometimes how much work they can do. Remember, they still are boys yet. Tracy

At that age, I made 1 dollar per hour. I would say 10 dollars per hour.

Haven't helped bale hay in probably 15 years. The guy paid $10 an plus a meal and drinks after. Growing up I seemed to all ways get paid last because I got paid more because I busted ass.

If they're good worker and you would like them to help again pay up. What would you what to be paid to do the same work? I would say 10.00 is the less amount you should pay. JMO Kenny L.

Only time I got paid by the hour was detasseling corn. On the farms I got paid per week. Last I remember was $40 per week. Beings it appears to be so hard to find ANY kids to work now a days, I would pay them good to keep their interest!

I pay the good ones very well— I figure 1/3 of what it’s worth and split between my help. Good ones get about 150-300$ Straw-alfalfa and I never do over 800 bales at a time. “Help around around here is hard to find— good help is almost impossible.” I try not to work them till it cools off if I can & supply drinks. Min wage I believe is about 15$ per hour.

I always got paid by the bale when I was young. That is how I paid haulers when I used to hire help. Price varied depending on who's equipment they used.

we pay .20 cents a bale, good labor unloads 2 loads an hour ,about 300 bales making $60 dollars an hour ,devided up ,,if 2 boys they make $30 hr each

1960 to 65 I paid $1.00 hour + meal and drink.

In '65 after I quit farming I went to work for Olds and took home just under $3.00 an hour.

If you want to get laughed at offer $10 hr in my area.I'd offer to pay them by the bale and 'unloading' bales covers a wide area like how much handling and stacking to do after

the bales come off the wagon.I'd expect to pay at least a $1 per bale to have the hay picked up and stacked in the barn since unloading and stacking is usually about 1/2 the work of hauling in hay that'd be a starting point.

At those ages, I would think that minimum wage should be OK. When I was that age I got $1/hr for stacking hay when the minimum wage was something like $1.65/hr. I was working for an uncle.

All very interesting how much people made 40 or 50 years ago but no relation to what to pay these days.Growing up I worked on the farm for dad for no 'pay' as such and only worked for others if i was paid well.Start working cheap for one person and no one will pay you more.

where i am at you will not get any one to buck bales on the wagon even at 20.00 an hour there used to always be teenagers asking for work hauling hay . not anymore

I have two boys that have helped me the last three years. They are in college now and a couple of weeks ago I paid them $20 an hour each because they did such a good job. They did the math and said it came to 29 cents a bale. I asked if they would answer the phone the next time I called they said yes. These two are not your average kids they had put up hay for two other farms the days preceding helping me.

I pay 60 cents a bale.

Last year, BHM (before hay monster), I, along with a father, shamed his 18 year old son and another to find two more helpers to show up to haul 300 bales of hay. 50 pound bales. None had hauled hay before......so they didn't know what they were doing......and refused to take advice, so spent the evening doing it all the hard way. None of them could seem to understand using a knee assist to elevate a hay bale. As a result, it took the 4 of them, and me.....about 5 hours to get it all off the ground and in the barn, and the last load of 70 bales wasn't even unloaded. So that was 300 x .60 or $180, which i rounded up to $200, divided 4 ways.....$50.....over 5 hours, so $10 per hour. They said they would not be back, and I wouldn't want them back anyway.

So enter the hay monster......same 300 bales x 60 cents = $180, but can now be hauled by 2 or at most 3 (aside from me) at 150 bales per hour.....so $180 / 2 hours = $90 per hour.......divided by 2 = $45 per hour......or divided by 3 = $30 per hour.

I can get help for that rate, and they call me to know if I need help. These are young men who have jobs, but get off at 5 pm and will work into the evening for cash money.

The best option I know of for hauling small square bales around here are the Amish, who will do a remarkable job.....what all of us remember kids would do.....for $15 per hour. I know two guys who pay that and can seem to find help at that rate. But they are 30 minutes from here and I have to go get them and take them home.

My next thought is to call the local high school and ask the FFA instructor if he can find kids to help.......hopefully the big lads who also play football. Between the FFA instructor and the football coach, they might find some motivation somewhere.

BTW, one guy who custom bales around here uses the Amish and he quoted me $1 per bale hauling to pick bales up in the field and stack them in the barn.

A year ago, I asked the kid I bought the hay monster from what they had made hauling hay and he told me $2 per bale, for alfalfa and other high $ hay in the area around Wichita. About $1 per bale for wheat straw.

He also told me he was too old to haul hay anymore.......I asked.......he was 27.
