I have a that is a 1971 185 and The engine needs overhauled. I have a later 185 engine that I want to rebuild and then swap them out so that I don’t have the tractor down for a long time. The newer engine has a lower sump on the oil pan. Are the engines the same with just a different pan or are the oil pumps different with lower sump? Also are there any other differences in the engines ?

Deep pan has crank driven oil pump VS cam driven....Will deep pan even fit in swap tractor? There were frt axle design changes on some models to accommadate deep pan. I vote fix engine and keep with tractor. Deal with the down time.

The lower sump would interfere with clearance of the roll axle. The 185 with the later engine main roll axle support was 1-2 inches deeper

We have done several. Look at the 4 bolts on the rear axle pivot bracket. The top two holes will have to be in the lower to holes - add a piece of metal , weld and drill 2 new holes. The front axle will have to be raised the exact same distance. Buy or fabricate a new front bushing and weld it on top of or in lieu of the original bushing. Measure the front pulley as well - the deep sump has a longer snout on the crank for the wider gear.

Thanks for the info. I’ll probably just wait till winter and do the engine that’s in it.
