I overhauled my series IV D17 and used an AGCO 175 kit since they no longer had D17 kits. So the first time I used it after getting it running was to pull a 3 - 16 plow at a plow day it did a good job but when I'd shut it off it would diesel a bit. After I got it home I marked the distributor and moved it either way trying to stop the dieseling but to get it to run best it wanted to be back to where I had it originally.

I got sick with kidney disease and I hand a friend who decided to fix it for me, it still diesels but now if its put on a load it starts to heat up. Today I was pulling a 4 row 30" planter and I'd have to stop pretty often and let it cool down. I have no idea where the timing is at this point, I plan to set it at tdc and set timing from there, but tomorrow I'm going to try retarding the timing a little so I can finish my replanting. It has the original cam and carburetor, is there besides timing anything else I should be looking at?

45's were 30deg BTDC ?

17's were 25deg?

My guess the higher compression 175 is even less.....Is the idle slow enough? when my 45 was just a little fast at idle it wanted to diesel when shut off.. That is hard on cranks!

Timing is checked at high idle. Retarded timing runs hot! Did you have cam out during O/H? If so hope you got in time with crank.

175's were to be at 23 degrees BTDC, which means put the F-25 mark at the top of the viewing hole. Set at wide open throttle with timing light. Idle the engine down to 400 RPM speed and allow it to idle that slow for at least a minute. Use better octane gas.

As Dr. Allis states, use a timing light! Not your ear.
