Howdy men! Would like to change Trans/Hydraulic Oil in my Allis 5050. Book recommends Allis Chalmers Power Lube 15-40 which I assume just means 15w-40 motor oil. With the technology used to make better oils since the manufacturing of the 5050, would you recommend using a different oil or continue to use what the operators manual recommends. Thanks in advance!

I can't imagine that is correct. 15W-40 was for the engine. 821 or 821XL was for the transmission/hydraulic system.

I agree with you Dr. Allis I was shocked to read it as well! Why I was hoping all the experts on here would have some good knowledge.

Well, mis-prints never seem to get corrected. On page 30 of a WD45 Operators manual there is a clear mis-print on step #4. Pretty sure the WD manual reads the same, so from 1948 to 1957 there was a mistake and never corrected.

If the 5050 was made from the Fiat 570 tractor (was it ?), the Castrol website calls for the same oil in engine and transmission/hydraulic to be used for the Fiat 570. Couldn't find a manual online for the 570.

Some skid loaders used the 10-30 oil in the hydraulics too,

10-30 is supposed to be a worldwide universal hydraulic oil. Most foreign built tractors are shipped over here with 10-30 hydraulic in them. MACK

Good to know MACK. Not planning on using tractor daily or working her real hard. Being a dry clutch I don't have to worry about hurting it. Shouldn't generate too much heat for what I plan on using her for so the gears aren't of too much concern. Primarily wanting to make sure the hydraulic pump is getting the proper fluid as I don't want to have to get a pump rebuilt 😬 I did look on the "lubrication and service guide" part of the manual and it does list using 15-40 for the hydraulic and transmission so probably not a misprint, unless it's misprinted in two places. On a side note, for the 5050 front wheel drive units, recommends 15-40 for the front axle housing and front axle final drives. Looking like for tractors made overseas 15-40 was the go to oil
