Talked to gramps today. Said he got about 8 acres of Corn Planted using the D-17. Said he had to wear carhartts because it's so dang cold. You can't keep a good guy from the tractor seat! 86 years young and still planting!  ------------- Galatians 5:22-24 "I got a pig at home in a pen and corn to feed him on, All I need is a pretty little girl to feed him when I'm gone!" |

That’s awesome, I have a video of our 86 year old father mowing hay with his 6060 and his 390 haybine. Don, Thanks for the update! Gives me hope that I might still be going at that age too! I mean its only 20 years away!:) I remember plowing and fitting ground with most of the clothes I owned on! Plus a heat houser. Dad didnt take the heat housers of the chains off the WD45's till he was planting corn. Neighbor across the road years ago, never let the milk cows out of the barn overnight until finished planting corn. ------------- I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science. |

| Good topic. An 8 row corn planter travels approximately 15 miles planting a square 40 acre field. My Dad pulled the old JD 8row runner planter with his AC D17 II. Before I was old enough to attend school(4-5yrs old)I’d help open seed bags for him. When I had managed to open his quota of bags, I’d run after him & jump a ride along on the back of the planter. I wonder how many miles I rode that planter? I learned how to operate things by watching him. When approaching turnrows, he’d power direct it from hi to low(running 3rd gear), idle down some(rt hand), push hydraulic lever up to lift planter(lt hand), turn steering(both hands), center planter for return pass while pushing left hydraulic lever down, power director in N while waiting for marker to descend, then power director to low, look back to check shafts we’re engaged, if all good then power director to high. He’d run 4-5mph tops. Up until a few years ago, he mowed, raked, & big round bale hay. Now at 92, he still gardens & mows lawn. |
