Here are links to two videos of my WD45 running, one with a somewhat decaying Stanley mufflerand the other with a new Nelson muffler that I ordered from Alex09. What do you think about the Nelson vs Stanley sound? Interestingly, I've always had the Stanley's rot out at the base. My Nelson (that is 30+ years old), is finally blowing out the weld seam at the top of the muffler and at the flange on the top side. Weird. Also, Nelson all the way.

I'm looking forward to hooking a 3-14 plow on her. One of the fields at the farm near me has a lot of clay in the soil - that should put a decent load on her. I noticed one other interesting thing when running this test. With the hood removed the gas tank isn't secured tightly. At certain engine speeds, the tank vibrated a lot with the old Stanley muffler. When I switched to the Nelson muffler, the vibration went away. Any ideas why that would happen? Perhaps a difference in back pressure? Any more votes on Nelson vs Stanley sound? Thanks, guys. Dave

Tank rattles because the hood strap is not on it. The strap holds the hood AND the tank in place. Nelson all the way. AGCO still carries them for the WD/WD45. I am old enuf to remember exactly how the original muffler on the WD-45 sounded under load. In the fall of 1958, I worked for a neighbor farmer riding his Oliver combine which was powered by it's own little Oliver 4 cyl. engine. It was a fairly heavy machine. He had just gotten himself a slightly used WD-45 to replace his old WC. The area around here is really hilly and whenever he came to the end of the field and turned up the hill, that old WD-45 really talked. I was only 17 at the time but that beautiful sound will never be forgotten. I guess the only other sound that came close was the sound of a flathead V-8 Ford with glasspacks or (for the Chevy guys) a 6cyl Chevy with a Fenton split header with "Smittys. So....how many of you guys go back that far? LOL

Well Brian, you're a little older than me, but I remember. We had what we called the ''BIG" hill. Whenever the 45 started about 1/4 of the way up, the governor kicked in and that PURDY sound came. NOTHING better than the A-C governors. Snappy, quick and Always worked! SaWEET... Dave, I'm thinking that the vibration was from the difference in resonance. Kind of like a barrel of a rifle. Different loads make the barrel 'resonate' (vibrate) differently. Just a guess on my part, but I'd almost bet on it. ------------- "Allis-Express" 19?? Thanks for the input on the vibration, guys. And some nice stories, too! I'm looking forward to hearing that governor kick in. Gotta stop raining here first. And I just tore the carb down to figure out why it keeps weeping gas out the air intake. I'm betting that the needle valve isn't sealing properly. ------------- WC, CA, D14, WD45 |
