          | does anyone have any advice for removing the rivets to replace the springs because in my experience if they break off your out of luck

 MACK I think he is talking about the rivet itself, not the spring on the rivet.

          | They are hardened drive screws. They are a pain to get out. Heating them with a torch will soften them. A vertical mill is best to get them out. HTH Tracy

          | I just did two sets.  I clamped a good set of vice grips on the rivet heads and just started rocking them back and forth until I could feel a little movement. Then took a hammer and knocked them out by hammering on the vice grips from the back side and they popped right out.  Installed the new springs and drove the pins back in with a dab of red Locktite on each one.

          | I had D17 that the latch rivets were very rusted and bent . I wanted to replace them and couldn't work them out . So I heated the with a torch and melted candle wax on them and they came out with a little twist very easily ! |

          | I've seen a lot of them that were snapped off at auctions, so you can't get ahold of them.  I don't have a mill, so now what?

          | the last set that i did i heated them up until they were red hot and let them slowly cool down and they were soft and i started to drill them out and then i used a bolt extractor (bad idea) but it snapped off. so  no i have a snap coupler lift latch with a bolt extractor stuck in it. so now i am just going to try welding the rivet head back on and filing a it down so i can get the spring over it

          | Ideally, I'd heat them cherry red, then as they go to cool, stick a bees wax candle against them, let the wax wick its way in.  Then set a pair of vice grips on them, real tight, and wiggle back and forth. most of the time, this works for me...

          | Pretty sure the carbide cutter I use is .218 diameter, or 7/32. If broke flush, you can carefully weld a nut on them, let it cool and twist it out. HTH Tracy

          | I did mine a couple years ago on WD45. Grind a bit off the rivet head - very carefully. Force the washer off. Once the washer is off get new exact size washer. Install spring and repeen. Was lots of material left to repeen. Did excellent job and I replaced all 4 springs. I’ll maybe see if I can post a picture later. Take your time. Have it in a vice to make it easier. |
