Sooooo I wanted to replace the busted, rusted out battery tray on my 1965 D17 IV and after a week of tearing stuff apart it has officially turned into a project. Most of these new parts were ordered over the winter as I had hoped to do a complete tear down of this old tractor but I decided to just do a band-aid fix for now. Not using the tractor for any real work, but want a solid electronics system and wiring and fuel system and and and etc. New muffler, intake/exhaust manifold, electronic ignition, solenoid, voltage regulator, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, rebuilt the carb and all new wiring. Haven't decided on all new gauges just yet. Just want it to run and move a bit so I can get it to my shop at my other home. The one question I have is in the front rim, is it the correct front rim? Thanks to all the cool folks here who have an unreal amount of knowledge!    |

Welcome to the forum and good way to start with some pictures. The rim looks fine to me. I will try to find a picture of the rims I have worked on. Your work on the tractor reminds me a lot of what I do when I get a new toy. I want them to be ready to start and do a little work if needed. You have a nice tractor! I spent a couple hours on my D17 last night mowing grass. Very enjoyable!:) And yes I was working on the battery too! Sorry its not close up. Regards, Chris

Mountainwolf69, Congratulations on your D17IV & welcome. Its “front rim looks like an earlier series rim? But that may only mean orange vs cream paint?? Looks like your D17IV’s engine side frames show signs of a previous loader being attached? If so, may want to thoroughly check it’s front end pivot bushing for excessive wear? |

The front rim other than being the wrong color scheme for a series IV can be correct. The early series iv came with 5 bolt hubs. |

Thanks for the welcome, been on here for a year or so but don't post much, only when I have questions or new pics to share. Yes this tractor did have a front end loader on it when I bought it, it went bye bye. As far as I can see there doesn't seem to be much wear on the pivot joint. I guess the question now is do I buy new front rims or take them down and have them blasted and repaint them. They seem to be in good shape all and all, the rear rims are in pretty good shape as well, a little deep rust around one air valve. This old girl has been rattle canned more than once so I don't doubt the rims have seen the can as well over the years. |
