I’m trying to replace the seal at the pulley shaft and I am not having any luck. Seal ring is a very hard metal and I am not able to collapse it. Do I need to remove the whole gear box and drive it out?

Ok, I’m an idiot. The entire outer housing has to be drove off requiring 2 persons tapping at the same time. The housing behind behind that support plate contains the seal which is in behind a bearing. 5 bolts and it comes off. So it’s off to a machine shop Monday to have the bearing pressed out and the new seal installed. The damage I did with a drill bit can be cleaned up and does not interfere with the seal. Wish I had a parts book on this mower but I have not been able to locate one.

That is the end of the bearing retainer and pivot bearing housing you are driving on.Please don't drive on this any more as it may make removal of the pivot bearing difficult. That housing retains the smaller gear shaft bearing and seal as well as being the part the larger pivot bearing's inner race is affixed to. That big bearing in your picture is the pivot bearing for the lifting of the sickle bar and really has nothing to do with the shaft the pulley drives. The smaller gear box shaft bearing and seal are held in by this retainer. Because the seal is inside the retainer, the retainer will have to be removed for access to the seal. Hard to explain, but as soon as you remove the gear box, it will be very obvious.

All that is why I just packed the gearboxes full of corn head grease.

Parts breakdowns are available for the mowers on AGCO parts books.

Put the mower back together this evening thanks to my brother Charlie for helping me. Now that we have done this it really is not that difficult of a job after we figured it out. It is a much easier repair if you remove the mower head at the hitch by removing the trip hardware on the right, unhook the big tension spring, the safety chain, and then drive out the pivot pin at the hitch. I feel much better about doing a proper repair instead of putting corn grease in a gear box designed to run in oil.

Brian, thank you for the great explanation and proper terminology of the parts. I tend to give parts names that I feel describes them because I don’t have a manual. Lots of great help on this site, thanks a bunch.
