My grandfather’s late WD shift tower was badly worn I found a nice replacement from a later 45 but it only has one pivot pin hole unlike my original one which uses 2 I have a new shifter but it is setup for two pins Can I still use it? Both have curved shifter TIA ,Matt

Matt, Well they worked for a long time with only one pin. I would say it should work ok with just one pin if there isn't a lot of slop in the seat for the ball on the shift lever. Its not too hard to drill through and make a second hole in the other side. A good sharp .25 inch drill bit will drill through the casting very easily. Just make sure that you do a better job then me, of aligning the new hole directly across from the existing one! Then you could install the second pin and have even more support for the shift lever. I would double check that the towers are the same. Because as you know there was a lot of difference in the old WD vs the newer WD45 tower. Sounds like you have that sorted out. I would recommend adding the second cross pin since you have it all apart. Regards,

I had a shifter problem on my WD and got a rebuilt one from Sandy Lake. Mine is a 51 straight shifter. Got the shift tower and a new shifter but during shipping it was gone. Big hole in the box. Anyway I couldn't find another straight shifter anywhere so I got a new curved one. Big difference there. Old one looked like it had been in the bottom of the ocean for a decade or two.
It was 1-11/16" shorter if I remember right. So I cut it in half below the ball after I did some precise ciphering and eye balling and welded a hardened bolt in there. The rebuilt tower had only one pivot pin so I did what Sugarmaker did drilled another hole on the other side. Much more stable, very little slop. Used a cut off trailer hitch ball that takes a bolt for the knob.

Did some checking in Allis Parts Catalog.
As noted above, early WD's only had one pin ( Gear Shift Pivot Pin )
Not sure when it started (perhaps WD Ser. 127007 or 45's ) had 2 pins.
The new Tower P/N 227322 ( Control Cover Assembly ) with 2 pins, can be used on early WD's along with 2 pins, curved Shifter Lever, and Shift Lever Knob.
I always thought '45' Towers and early WD Towers were different, non interchangeable.

I have two of the late curved shifter 1953 WDs and they both have a single pin in the tower. Hmmm.

I believe I had read earlier that the 2 pins started at around Ser. 154XXX,
but I couldn't find it now.

From what I know they are completely different. I made what I had work and has for the last 10 years without issues.

Folks as stated above Allis seemed to use what they had to build tractors!
So This WD45 tower only had one pin. Humm, now I wonder if the actual casting is actually the same from a WD to a WD45. And then the shift lever is what is different? That makes sense for a design stand point keep the tower the same but then change the rails and the forks and the lever for the WD45 series. Adding the second side pin hole would have been a easy machining change for the WD45. So maybe my 45 actuall had a WD shift tower put on sometime in its life. Humm. Anyway yes the shift levers are very different between a WD and a 45 I have a picture on here some where. WD on left WD45 on right. Regards, Chris Regards, Chris
