I have a replacement plastic dash for my 7040. My question is what’s the best method to remove cab steering wheel? Thanks

If it was mine (and it isn't) I'd bust the plastic around the center hub and carefully use a three-jaw puller to remove it and throw it away. The replacement would be from a 7010-20-45 which has a smaller diameter and shallower dish making it easier to get in and out of the cab.

Thanks DrAllis. Since you mention it, my 79’ 7060’s steering wheel measures 14 7/8” diameter by 4.5” dish. The 77’ 7040’s steering wheel measures 15 7/8” by 6 7/8” dish.
So are you referring to the 79’ 7060’s size steering wheel size being same as the 7010,7020,or7045? I don’t own any of the later 3 tractors. I have already invested in a set of black belly cab stairs to replace the 7040’s shin buster steps, so getting in/out of it’s not as bad even with its larger steering wheel.
Then after removing the steering wheel’s 1 1/4” hold nut, what do you recommend using as a spacer over steering column’s telescopic button? Or could a punch divot into the center of that button be ok to push the puller’s screw bolt against?

Use a socket. Do NOT push against that button. Black 7060 is the same as I suggested.

This afternoon, I’ve been tensioning a 3 jaw puller on the steering wheel to the point that the plastic base is just beginning to crack/fatigue from pressure. So I could try heating it’s inner metal plate, carefully with acetylene torch. I Really don’t want to mutilate it.

Thinking that if I wreck this steering wheel trying to remove it, then the possibility of removing a savage yard one could have similar outcome? I probably know already, but has anyone ever tried purchasing a smaller NOS steering wheel from AGCO? Or aftermarket?

If I was going to try and save a steering wheel, I think I'd try to drill/tap two 1/4" holes in the hub and put pressure on it that way. If you could smack it from underneath with the pressure on it, it might let go. Air hammer ??

Yes. Maybe I’ll try my harmonic balancer puller along with drilling/tapping holes for it. That’s a lot of work too. So DrAllis, now I’m understanding why you’d just cut off the old one. After doing a quick online search, part # 71142487 is readily available aftermarket. Any vendors on the forum interested in quoting me a price on a new one?

I slide a couple of steel straps under the wheel, to give puller jaws something solid to get a hold of. Being inside a cab should make it easier to remove than an open station.

Like maybe a depth collar from a hydraulic cylinder ??

Ed & DrAllis, Yes your suggestions have merit, so I’ll give it a go. The steering wheels lower plastic casing is cavitated to its inner metal splined opening. It has connecting plastic ribs about every inch from the inner metal outward to its outer round hub. My puller’s three 1/2” wide jaws only caught its outer hub. Two jaws were positioned very near or directly over a couple of those ribs. One jaw was not & that one began to deform/crack the outer hub. Ed, yeah one would think since it’s inside a cab that it’s shaft corrosion would be minimal? But since my online search for a replacement, I’ve learned there are 36 plines on it’s 13/16” shaft. Wow, thats a tremendous amount of area for rust/corrosion.
