First time member. I have an Allis Chalmers 170 that needs a new steering wheel. It is so rusty under the cover plate that I can't tell what is holding it on. It looks the the remnants of a nut but if it was it's pretty much gone. I would assume there is a spline steering shaft under there somewhere. If any one has experience on getting the old one off or knows a link to a parts breakdown that would show what was once there, your help would be appreciated. Thanks, Will

Fine thread nut that takes 1 1/8" socket. Splines hold the steer wheel hub to the shaft. Bust off the plastic and split the hub on opposite sides with a cutting disc. Maybe split the nut too and use a thread die to clean the shaft up.

Thanks for the reply Doc.
It is so rusted away that there are no corners of the nut left. Do you know if there will be any difference in the cutting density, color of sparks, or anything other than a good guess that would let me know I have reached the steering shaft, don't want to make a bigger problem then I already have!

I have used a hand grinder to make a couple of notches on opposite sides of the steering wheel collar, but don't go too deep.  Then switch to a hammer and coal chisel when you think you are getting close to the shaft.  Cut the outer wheel off first, but leave the spokes so you have something to hold on to.  It takes time but I have done it without damaging the shaft.

Thanks Dseries 4. I will give that a try tomorrow and let you know how I do.
