It seems my oil relief ball has gone missing can anyone tell me what the size is... I'm guessing it just has to fit snug in the oil pump shaft. my hope is I can just stop into a hardware store to get one.

5/16" I believe. Get 2 so you can use the first one with a soft punch and a sharp whack with a light hammer to make sure the seat will confirm to the ball, then throw the 1st one away. It should have a special spring and pin holding the ball to the seat.
