Air filter housing?

The air filter housing on my 4-53 Detroit has rusted thru.
I have a canister type air filter housing from a 350 cu in gas engine.
Would this be large enough for the 212 cu in Detroit ? Does it matter gas vs diesel on air flow capacity?

The way I see it, if the inlet/outlet diameters are the same it should work. The surface area of the filter will dictate how often you change it.

Hey JohnKC,,,my thoughts are that the air intakes are sized to flow the amount of air based on the cubic inch size of the engine. I would not hesitate to use the one you got.

A 350 cu gas engine flows 350 cubic inches of air basically at wide open, and at idle a whole lot less for every two revolutions...

Where as the 212 Cu. in DD flows 424 cubic inches of air all the time at every two revolutions.

74 cu. in. more or, I believe 12% more volume.

I was thinking along that line, but didn’t know how to formulate it.
4 stroke vs 2 stroke and cu in difference. Therefore I asked the question.

Also need remember that a Two Stroke is using a Blower, it pulls far harder than a Piston Engine when under demand.
