Have a new to me 7040 and pulled the valve cover to replace a leaking gasket and want adjust lash as well. Service manual for 7020 & 7045 call for .018" cold. Would I be correct to assume this is the same for the 7040? Also discovered a leaking plug on the water jacket with a buggered up hex fitting. Hope this is an easy fix.

.017" or .018" COLD is just fine. Be sure to check both rocker arm shaft oil lines to be sure they are tight.  Braze/weld a clip inside the cover front and rear to keep the gasket in place. Glue gasket to a clean and dry valve cover and let cure. Use 3M8001 yellow glue or something similar. Wipe a thin coat of RTV on the gasket with your finger just before  setting it down on the head. Use RTV on the valve cover bolts to help keep from vibrating loose and still be able to snug them up later on.

I had a young lad ask me how long I had been 'fixin tractors' .  Told him neigh on 50 years.. he counted on his fingers for nearly a minute then he said "wow dude, that's like TWO retirements!"
