Hello everyone. After getting the injection pump rebuilt and getting some leaky cylinders repaired, I'm eyeing up the Allis 180 for other necessary maintenance issues. I bought this tractor about 6-7 years ago so don't know its history beyond that. I have used it fairly little thus far but am going to be working up about 5 acres and planting hay this spring. I am wondering if removing the final drive pans, cleaning, and replacing the gaskets would be warranted. I am not having any weird noises or anything but am wondering if these are susceptible to moisture or other issues? What have you all found when you opened them? Too bad they did not put a drain plug in so that a person could get a look at the fluid.

I did mine on a WD45 and am glad I did. Didn't find any chunks but the 50+ year old lube had a real bad smell. You will feel better if you do. I suggest removing the wheel to get better access to the pan bolts.

It wouldn't hurt a thing to change the oil, its gonna have a smell because its the old gear oil stuff, really the only way water can get in is the sweat from inside with the outside temps heating and cooling , if you have them off id put a drain plug in for easy draining next time

Gaskets and some 80/90 gear oil doesn't cost much. Won't hurt to change it, especially when you do not know the history of the tractor.

Been through this with my 185. I agree with the other posters and suggest you also change out all of the hydraulic fluid in both reservoirs.

I bought a '39 B (among others) a few years ago in winter. Couldn't winch it on to my trailer. Took off a final drive cover and found solid ice. Had to remove both and let the ice melt. I know its not a 180 but the lesson might still apply. Bob@allisdowneast
