          | The starter on my 1965 190 gas had started to act up and occasionally only the solenoid would click and not engage the starter. As everything does as soon as it got cold and I needed the loader for loading round bales in hay rings it quit altogether. Took it off today and opened it up to check the brushes and it had quite a bunch of chafe ( weed pieces and seeds). Evidently came in the cooling vents over the years. Cleaned out a good handful , checked brushes, cleaned armature and lubed parts that needed it. Replaced it and it starts like a champ. So if you have problems before you replace the starter you might open it up and check for dirt and junk. |

          | Just went thru this on a 180 Diesel, only has the Lucas Starter and no one around here had a Delco interchange unit and no rebuilders working Lucas line anymore. Parts for the OE Lucas are scarce where is cheaper to buy a Korean knock off, could not find a Lucas solenoid for less than $30 also a Korean knock off, with bearings and brushes with a solenoid was cheaper to buy a complete starter. |
