D-17 gas serial number 33833. DJ.s and Steiner.s list a muffler for serial numbers less than 32000, and one for serial numbers greater than 42000. But nothing for the numbers in between. What gives?

There are only THREE mufflers for a D-17 gas. The original muffler was the exact same as a WD45,  was round, and attached with 2 bolts and was about 3 inches in diameter and this was prior to s/n 32000. The next muffler clamped to a pipe coming out of the exhaust manifold, and was round and about 4 inches in diameter and was prior to s/n 42000. The last muffler from s/n 42,001 and up were the OVAL muffler and is considered a series 3 or 4 muffler. This all being said doesn't mean someone hasn't changed manifolds or cut larger holes in the hood to accept something different.

Would sure like to find an oval Nelson muffler for a D17 series III. Nearly impossible though. They sounded so nice.

If you find a Nelson to a 180/185, graft that onto a D-17 gasser and you'll love the sound it has with less back pressure. The body is the same size. You just have to make a pipe adapter to slide over the pipe on the exhaust manifold to get things to match up.

They cross reference it to Allis 70261975.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I'd love to find an oem oval Nelson with the offset outlet like they came with back in '63.
