They both had the HIGH/LOW trans as an OPTION and not in the early models.

Only difference is the wider rear side pieces, I forget the correct part name, its the piece between the rear and final drive...Wink

D-10 and D-12 are identical tractors except for the width. As was said before, the D-10 is a one row tractor and the D-12 which is 11.5" wider is a two row tractor. Early ones had a 138 cu.in. engine and NO live PTO. Later ones had the 149 cu.in. engine and independent live hydraulics and PTO. An optional high/low range transmission was available on the Series III models.

Look at the steering linkages at the front axle, left side. The d12 has more parts.
Google up images of both and compare.

I have a '65 series 3 D-10 with the 2 speed gear box in front of the 4 speed transmission. It will do 16.25 mph.
I like taking it on caravans. It is easy to load on my flat bed trailer I tow behind our class C motor home.

Brian, you are correct on the steering linkage. D-12 has an extra pivot point to accommodate a wider front axle tread width setting

Just so there's no misunderstanding about the optional 2-speed gearbox. It was an under-drive, not an over-drive. So none of the original 4-speeds are any faster, only slower.

underdrive .. great,, that's what I'd like to have to run the 5' rototiller !
The D-14 is a tad too fast....
course I'd have t find a D-12 and build another shed to hide it..

I think if you compare the ground speeds, under-drive 1st gear in the D10/12 is the same as low side of 1st on a D14.

You are right. I had assumed that it was over-drive, I had to dig out my manuals and check.
Sixteen and two tenths mph is a pretty speed for the hp.

Thanks,
Dusty

Awful purty there Charlie, have the twin to your D12 with the live pto and live hydraulics, though some swear they did not exist that early.

The nose weight was an option, along with the grill guard. I have both, thanks to Snowman, He built both.

Never drove one. With that gearshift shaft bent like that, do they shift OK?

Yes, same gearshift as a D14/15 has.

Forgot to mention the Throttle is different as Allis went with a different brand than what it had before.
One is push and one is pull. Makes for remembering fun when hopping on them

4th gear in a CA, D-10 or D-12 is definitely a road gear. I remember when I was a kid that our CA would run circles around the other tractors on the road when going farm to farm to cultivate.

Those are great looking tractors!! I spent many summer days hauling tobacco with a D10.Perfect for the drag middles and smooth sailing from the fields to the tobacco barns.
