I'm looking to replace the lug bolts and the bolts that attach the rail clamp assemblies to the wheel center on my CA with galvanized or zinc plated bolts. The lug bolts appear to be 9/16"-18 x 1"; the rail clamp bolts are 5/8"-11  x 1.5" carriage bolts, grade 5.

I've combed through a lot of online bolt stores as well as all the local bolt shops and so far am finding zinc plated carriage bolts at McMaster-Carr. But I can't find zinc plated or galvanized lug bolts anywhere.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks much.
Dave

Dave,
Do you need bolts or plating? If bolts are good maybe take them and get them coated?
 Regards,
 Chris

Can probably find the lugs at any tractor dealer.  Just have to shop around.

I've never gotten lugs from this place, but they have had every other type of bolt I've looked for. Including the eccentric nuts and bolts and weight nits and bolts.  I even got nyloc nuts for those.

The rail clamp bolts aren't carriage head there plow bolts. I got them and implement wheel bolts from the local John Deere dealer they had them instock. They are use in lots of farm equipment. We get them in boxes of 100 at the farm. Go through a lot of them changing chisel plow shovels. if you use the galvanized bolts from the building big box they are grade zero bolts.

Maybe it was the WD that had plow bolts. I didn't go out to my frozen tractor shed and look.

Thanks guys. I'll check those sources. The rail clamp bolts are carriage bolts - they have the square shank just below the head and the center has square holes. Smile

McMaster Carr is a good source for carriage bolts.

OK - I'm back with some time to write more than a quick reply.

I realize that the bolt heads are usually painted PO#1. I'm going this route as I'd like to avoid chowdering the paint when I tighten the bolts, to avoid rusting, and to get a different look.

The challenges here are two: size and plating. Lots of places carry lug bolts - up to 1/2-20 - but not the 9/16-18 that I need. The carriage bolts are easier - except that lots of places don't carry them as short as 1.5" or in 5/8" diameter. The plating just makes everything harder, though as Chris suggested, I can have bolts plated. That may be the route I go with the lug bolts. Trailer shops (thanks Steve) MAY have the lug bolts - Redneck has a 9/16-18 with 1.5" of threaded bolt rather than the 1"+ that the CA uses - and the sales guy wasn't sure whether their bolts are plated or...... Home Depot, etc, don't carry lug bolts that fit the CA. Nor do the local hardware stores anymore!

I've found zinc plated carriage bolts at McMaster-Carr, which Joe (TX) recommended.

I'm going to the local green shop this afternoon to see if they have the lug bolts, though the first question I got from the parts guy on the phone yesterday was for the JD model #. LOL

More to come.........and thanks again.

Dave

I'm b-a-a-a-c-k!

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Or so the old New England saying goes!

Just back from a visit with my local JD emporium with a "Great news, bad news, good news" story.

First the great news: JD has 9/16-18 lug bolts plated in zinc chromium. Part name is JD16. The head is a little longer than the AC bolt which is no issue, and the chamfer is a little longer than on the AC bolt. I was concerned that the chamfer might protrude through the center and hang up on the hub. Tried one in the wheel center and it doesn't protrude through the center - it'll be fine. And they are plated so no issues with rusting, paint chipping, etc.  ClapLOL

Then the bad news: the parts counter guy had no clue how to match up the sample I brought in. He showed me a handful of bolts from a box on the "odd parts" shelf, none of which matched.

And finally the good news: I was on my way out the door when a fellow at the service desk walked over and dropped a box in front of the parts guy......which had 3 of the bolts I wanted. 9 more are on order. He knew what was in inventory and where to find it!

So the prize goes to John who suggested visiting the local tractor dealers. But really to everyone who took the time to think about this and to respond.

Dave
